Hartford Courant company history timeline

1807

It ran ads for such famous Americans as George Washington, became the subject of an unsuccessful libel lawsuit filed by Thomas Jefferson, and in 1807, announced the arrival of a new era of transportation by publishing Robert Fulton’s account of his steamboat voyage from Albany to New York City.

1837

The Hartford Courant is the oldest continuously published city newspaper in the country; it began as a weekly paper in 1764 and became a daily in 1837.

Diana McCain, head of the Research Center at the Connecticut Historical Society, said that through the decades, The Courant has tried to remain adaptable, “whether switching from weekly to daily publication in 1837 or expanding onto the Internet 150 years later.”

1860

When Lincoln won the 1860 election, The Courant's headline pronounced: "VICTORY, VICTORY, WE'VE GOT 'EM."

1913

In 1913, with its daily edition in high demand, the paper published its first-ever Sunday edition.

In 1913, the publication launched its Sunday paper and one year later the tri-weekly edition was discontinued.

1964

The Greater Hartford (Connecticut) Chapter was founded in 1964 as a charter member of the National SCORE Association with the mission to match the experience of seasoned business owners and managers to the problems and challenges confronting existing and prospective small business owners.

1979

The steady growth of the paper in the 20th century eventually caught the eye of a Los Angeles-based media company called Times Mirror, and in 1979, amid a flurry of media-outlet mergers, Times Mirror purchased the paper.

2000

In 2000, the Chicago-based Tribune Company purchased Times Mirror.

2022
