The Haverford School company history timeline

1884

The new boys preparatory boarding school was opened on September 13, 1884 as The Haverford College Grammar School.

On the 23rd of September 1884, under Dean Sharpless' direction, four men and one woman began teaching 25 boys at The Haverford College Grammar School.

The school was founded in 1884 at the request of Alexander and Lois Cassatt, niece of President James Buchanan, as The Haverford College Grammar School.

1885

In the spring of 1885, the School graduated its first young man, Walter E. Smith.

1888

The Crosman years were marked by an emphasis on a fundamental education that included an athletics program that produced national champions in hockey and tennis, and on an arts course that graduated Maxfield Parrish in 1888.

1893

A history of Haverford College for the first sixty years of its existence Authors: Phillip C. Garrett and John G. Bullock Published: 1893 Call Number: LD2213.A4

1903

By 1903, the school withdrew from the college and became an independent nonprofit school still known as The Haverford School.

Originally affiliated with neighboring Haverford College, in 1903 the school became independent, changed its name to The Haverford School, and moved to its current location across Railroad Avenue from the college.

1918

1929

Severinghaus and his young wife, the former Emmavail Luce, came to The Main Line in 1929 and would not leave until 36 years later.

2021

Tyler Casertano began his tenure as Head of School on July 1, 2021.
