Stock in these mom-and-pop shops sold out so quickly that when Costco came calling in 2013 wanting to sell baby shampoo in family-size packs, the Honest team relented.
Raising a total of $127 million through August 2014, The Honest Company has been able to create more products in different categories -- dish soap, kitchen cleaner, detergent, nipple balm, multivitamins and even nursery furniture.
In September 2015, a customer in California sued the Honest Company, alleging that it falsely advertised its products and “[harmed] consumers by inducing them to purchase and consume the Honest Products on the false premise that the products are natural and effective,” a court filing showed.
In April 2016, Organic Consumers Association, a nonprofit based in Minnesota, sued Honest, claiming its infant formula was falsely labeled as organic.
Any plans the company had for an IPO were apparently tabled, and Unilever—which, like many major firms at the time, sought to move more into natural products—reportedly made a bid to acquire Honest in 2016.
Leading up to 2017, The Honest Company hit several snags, including a voluntary recall of its baby wipes, a reported ingredient-labeling issue, and a class-action lawsuit over the ingredients used in some products.
While the company seemed invincible, it raised a down round in 2017 and lost its unicorn status.
The company announced plans to launch or relaunch more than 80 new products in those categories by the end of 2018.
They buckled down on what made their company successful in the first place and are seeing renewed growth in 2018.
The changes have helped Honest grow its gross margins, although it’s unlikely that the business, which lost $31 million in 2019 but trimmed its net loss to $14.5 million last year, has ever been profitable.
And today, in 2021, she's known as the founder of The Honest Company.
