The Hotel Group company history timeline

1984

1984 After serving a prison sentence, Rubell and Schrager open the Morgans hotel.

The FT30 Index is the oldest of the indices, and was created to track the UK’s top 30 companies. It was replaced in 1984 with the FTSE100, where IHG is listed today.

1985

Morgans Hotel Opens: 1985

1988

As GrandMet focused its core business and expanded into fast food through the purchase of Burger King, it sold IHC to Japanese based Saison Group in 1988.

In 1988, in reaction to the British government limiting the number of pubs which brewers could directly own, Bass invested in the expansion of its small line of hotels.

They took their hotel-as-theater concept a step further in 1988 when they opened their second property, the 205-room Royalton, located across the street from the famous Algonquin on 44th Street.

1989

In 1989, the British Government limited the number of pubs which brewers could directly own, resulting in Bass investing in the expansion of its small line of hotels.

1989 Rubell dies of AIDS.

1990

He was able to open the Paramount in October 1990, and like the Morgans and Royalton it was an immediate hit.

In 1990, it purchased Holiday Inn International from Kemmons Wilson and expanded into North America.

1993

For several years he had his eye on the Miami market, and in 1993 Morgans bought the 328-room Delano hotel in Miami Beach, having it redesigned as a contemporary family resort.

1994

In 1994, the Group launched Altis Park Hotel, a 4-star contemporary styled project with 300 rooms located in the Encosta das Olaias development.

1995

By the end of 1995, NH was already one of Spain’s leading city hotel chains, with 54 establishments located nationwide.

In that same year, Schrager brought in some executive help, hiring Steven A. Hicks, a former Marriott hand, to serve as director of operations, and William Sheehan, former Omni chairman, to serve as chief financial officer. It opened to considerable acclaim in 1995.

1996

Also in 1996 Morgans acquired the venerable 375-room Clift in San Francisco.

1998

In March 1998, Saison Group sold IHC to British brewery Bass, which traces its roots back to 1777, when William Bass established the Bass Brewery in Burton-upon-Trent.

Schrager also took over the Miramar in Montecito, California, in March 1998, converting it into a resort, and took his first steps overseas.

Then came the Altis Suites in 1998, an apartment hotel located next to the Altis Grand Hotel.

As part of its strategic efforts to foster culture, in 1998 the chain launched NH Stock Art, travelling exhibitions in the vicinity of the Group’s hotels in a bid to support the work of upcoming artists.

1999

In 1999 NH Hoteles also acquired 91.5% of Sotogrande, a company devoted to the development of premium residences designed for family living.

1999 First London property opens.

2000

In 2000, Bass sold its brewing assets (and the rights to the Bass name) to the major Belgian brewer Interbrew for £2.3 billion and changed its name to Six Continents.

In 2000 the Company acquired the Dutch hotel chain, Krasnapolsky, a transaction which doubled its size.

Once renovated it offered more than 800 rooms after it opened as more of an economy hotel in 2000.

2001

The idea was supposed to be launched in the Morgans' hotels in 2001, but other events intervened to derail the plans: the economy soured and, more importantly, the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, had a dramatic impact on New York City's hotels and tourist industry.

The acquisition of Mexican hotel chain Chartwell in 2001 added another 14 establishments.

The company opened the Shore Club in Miami in 2001, holding a modest stake in the oceanside resort for which it served as a manager.

2002

In 2002 NH continued its M&A-led international growth strategy, acquiring the German chain, Astron Hotels, which added 46 hotels in Germany, six in Austria and one in Switzerland to the burgeoning portfolio.

Business began to pick up in 2002, and now Schrager was turning his attention to Las Vegas, putting down a deposit on the Maxim casino-hotel.

2003

InterContinental Hotels Group was founded on April 15, 2003 and is headquartered in Denham, the United Kingdom.“

The split completes in April 2003 and IHG becomes a standalone company.

Once again a period of expansion resulted in overbearing debt for Schrager, who in 2003 breached bank covenants of $355 million and the Clift was forced to file for bankruptcy protection.

2005

IHG retained Britvic, the soft drinks division, until December 2005 when it sold its interest in the company by aninitial public offering.

2005 Schrager resigns as CEO.

2006

In February 2006 he took the company public, netting approximately $275 million.

In 2006 the Company surpassed the 14,000 employee mark and the chain became the undisputed sector leader in Italy following the acquisition of local hotel chains Framon and Jolly.

2007

Having been awarded the Prince Felipe Award for Excellence in Tourism and been named the Best Place to Work in Spain, Holland and Germany, NH Hoteles started out 2007 with 341 hotels in 21 countries on three continents, 49 projects in the pipeline and 19,000 employees of 115 different nationalities.

2009

In 2009, NH and Spanish chain Hesperia agreed to merge their respective hotel management businesses.

2010

In September 2010 the Group had more than one newcomer with the inauguration of the Altis Prime, a luxury apartment hotel.

In 2010, NH Hoteles launched a pioneering product, Ecomeeting, in the MICE segment.

2011

By 2011, NH Hoteles was positioned as one of the world’s top 25 hotels and one of Europe’s most important chains, with around 400 establishments and 60,000 rooms.

2012

Welcoming athletes and spectators from all over the world, Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express serve as official hotel services providers to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

In 2012 NH Hoteles articulated a new corporate governance model, appointing a new non-executive to chair its highest governing body and a new CEO, thereby splitting these roles and duties.

Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group was named Hotel Group of the Year at Worldwide Hospitality Awards 2012

2013

2013 was a milestone year in the Company’s ongoing transformation.

2014

In April/May 2014 the company reportedly rejected a $10 billion takeover bid from an unknown suitor, believed to be Starwood.”

In addition to reviewing and promoting commercial, marketing and communication plans, in 2014 the Group made an effort to design solutions with a competitive advantage.

2015

Regarding the Expansion Plan, at the beginning of 2015 the Group completed the acquisition of the Latin American chain Hoteles Royal which allowed NH Hotel Group to launch its brands in Colombia, become leader in Bogotá, and increase the presence in Chile and Ecuador.

2018

Radisson Hotel Group rebranded Club Carlson loyalty program to Radisson Rewards Rezidor Hotel Group AB (publ) renamed to Radisson Hospitality AB (publ) on 7 May 2018.

2019

In 2019 the extension of the Altis Avenida Hotel to the entire building was completed with more 48 rooms, the Rossio Gastrobar and a panoramic sundeck.
