The Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center company history timeline

1898

What would a historic gem like the Hotel Roanoke be without a series of tales to tell? The first tragedy was a July 1898 kitchen fire that not only shuttered the doors but prompted a “Phoenix” moment with restoration and additions completed in seven short months.

1899

The hotel was restored and reopened in January, 1899.

According to the Virginia Department of Historic Resources (DHR), “the original hotel, rebuilt in 1899 following a fire, was demolished for the present structure”…a surprising fact for most.

1931

The small 1931 wing, at the rear of the present hotel, is the oldest surviving portion of the structure.

1937

By then the Hotel's "Queen Anne" appearance had evolved into something Tudorean, the finishing touches of which were added in the major alterations of 1937-38, when Hotel Roanoke acquired its distinctive facade and entrance.

1938

The Regency Room – featuring award-winning French-inspired Southern cuisine – dates back to 1938 and has been an icon of the Roanoke social and culture experience.

1980

Benchmark Hospitality was launched in 1980 as an independent company and today operates worldwide from offices in The Woodlands (Houston), Texas, and regional offices in New Jersey, Washington State, Japan and Chile.

1989

n 1989, Norfolk Southern Corporation, direct descendant of Kimball's Norfolk and Western Railroad, concluding that its transportation business meant rail service, not room service, closed the Hotel it had owned and operated for 107 years and gave it to the Virginia Tech Real Estate Foundation.

1992

After a six-week 1992 “Renew Roanoke” campaign to reopen the hotel raised more than $5,000,000, N&W donated $2,000,000 to give the project a hyper boost.

1993

After being closed for four years, in 1993 the Hotel Roanoke began a multi-million-dollar restoration and remodeling renovation project, funded by a package of public and private financing in conjunction with the City of Roanoke and Virginia Tech.

1995

The Hotel Roanoke reopened on April 3, 1995, managed by the DoubleTree chain.

2004

In 2004, it was converted in a museum devoted to the photography of O. Winston Link as well as housing the Roanoke Valley Visitors and Convention Bureau.

2016

On February 28, 2016, The Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center transferred within Hilton from the DoubleTree to the Curio Collection by Hilton brand.

To celebrate the opening, guests staying at least two nights when booking the best available rate will receive 1,000 bonus HHonors points per stay between March 1 and June 1, 2016.

2018

From Hilton’s United States Securities and Exchange Commission annual report for the fiscal year ending December 31, 2018, Curio Collection by Hilton is described as a brand “created for travelers who seek local discovery and one-of-a-kind experiences.
