The Institution of Engineers company history timeline

1938

The Institution's International Congress in 1938 coincided with the Empire Exhibition in Glasgow and the Congress attracted almost 1000 delegates from 22 countries with the first Viscount Weir in the chair.

1939

The Centenary was marked in more lasting form by arranging for two of the ancient pews in Glasgow Cathedral to be renovated and for the Institution's coat of arms - which had been presented as a warrant by the retiring President in 1939 - to be carved on each.

1948

1950

Further generosity to the Institution has included the setting up about 1950 of a fund to allow meetings to be held outwith Glasgow.

1964

In January 1964 the IEE News appeared which was a monthly house newsletter devoted to the Institution’s work.

1968

Taken over by the Ministry of Munitions during the First World War, and in part by the Shipbuilding Conference in the Second, the building was to serve the Institution until 1968 when size and maintenance costs made it no longer viable.

1977

GV Srinivasulu, MIE respectively. • With regard to Vijayawada Local Centre of the IEI, this centre was established in April, 1977 in a shed located in the Irrigation Offices compound.

1980

Later, with the donations raised, a small wing was constructed during 1980.

1987

The Engineers Australia logo was originally designed in 1987 by Dr Martin Cole.

2003

Dr Cole’s design was updated in 2003, which added highlights to grant a sense of three-dimensionality to the logo.

2005

Since his retirement from the military in 2005, he has led the taskforce to rebuild the area around Innisfail following Cyclone Larry, served as Chancellor of the Australian Catholic University, and served on several boards including QANTAS and the Australian Rugby Union.

2011

The first seven inductees were announced by President Gordon Masterton at the James Watt Dinner in September 2011.

In 2011, IESIS launched a new initiative, The Scottish Engineering Hall of Fame, to celebrate Scotland's proud tradition of engineering and shipbuilding, and to provide iconic role models for young people before they make career choices.
