Purpose
To design, develop and evaluate welding machines and associated processes; to conduct applied research into new areas of welding machine design and/or on new welding processes.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Utilizes and applies experience in a broad range of fields to understand weld machine development process and interactions between machine design and weld process development/optimization; collaborates with team members and members of the department, providing the benefit of this understanding to enhance the execution of projects
Develops new welding machines, software, welding processes and/or test methodologies in accordance with company policies/procedures and in consideration of:
Market needs, requiring direct interface with customers, sales and marketing
Industry codes, standards, and specifications, and
Manufacturing process capabilities, requiring direct interface with manufacturing and methods personnel
Establishes standards and methodologies for and conducts evaluations of product performance
Develops/refines test methods, as applicable, to support new product development, product evaluations, and competitive benchmarking
Facilitates development of manufacturing process capabilities to support introduction of new products
Works with minimal direct supervision, conferring with superiors as needed; has appreciable latitude for independent action or decision

Structures projects for and provides supervision and mentoring to Engineering Interns

Basic Requirements
Baccalaureate degree in Engineering (or equivalent). Degree in Welding Engineering preferred.
Minimum 8 years engineering experience.
Processes and applies a broad knowledge of engineering and scientific principles, practices and procedures, within the field of specialization, to the completion of difficult assignments.
Computer literate with working knowledge of MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access and MS PowerPoint, as a minimum.
Possesses and applies both practical and fundamental understanding of various arc welding processes.
Experience with Robotic Programming.
Experience with numerical modeling tools including Python is a plus.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Works effectively in a cross-functional team environment

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Hands-on role in the setup, operation, and cleaning of bench and pilot scale experiments and equipment, with focus on upstream cultivation of microorganisms and hand-off of fermentation broth to downstream operations.
Work on lab and pilot-scale processes emphasizing upstream cultivation operations including media preparation, aseptic operations, fermenter setup, seed train development in flasks and fermenters, main fermentation operations for product formation, etc.
Operate lab and pilot equipment and processes independently, including operational support of fermentation processes over weekends.
Conduct analytical methods required to monitor processes and materials; hands-on skills with instrumental analysis and wet chemistry.
Provide detailed observations of experiments. Record data and assist with the analysis of results.
Write test protocols, SOP's and reports.

REQUIREMENTS:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
* Develop and improve chemical products used in a variety of manufacturing and mechanical systems in order to enhance processes, safety and quality in order to meet customer needs and provide solutions to application problems.
* Investigate applicability of new and replacement raw materials in order to enhance performance and minimize cost.
* Evaluate and incorporate alternate raw materials in existing products.
* Carry out clearly specified tests and determinations, in order to answer questions and address problems of customers. Develops and performs customer requested product analysis and testing.
* Determine performance characteristics of competitive products using physical, instrumental and wet analysis techniques.
* Clearly and orderly record all observations and data. Report results in a clear and concise manner to enhance technical exchange Provide legal and archival documentation for patent applications.
* Develop or improve test methods to enhance R&R, efficiency and field performance predictability.
Additional Responsibilities
* Provide technical service and knowledge to customers and sales associates based upon the chemist's current level of expertise. Visits customers when required.
* Provide assistance to manufacturing in order to improve the quality and efficiency of the manufacturing process.
* Assist manufacturing and the quality assurance lab in solving quality and production problems.
* Comply with safety regulations and make recommendations towards the improvement of safety and environmental concerns.
* Maintain equipment, glassware and workspace in order to keep them clean and well-functioning. Properly dispose of all laboratory waste. Participate in ensuring good management of laboratory equipment and storage spaces for chemicals and raw materials.
* Follow all ISO quality and environmental standards as provided in the various procedural manuals. Ensure that all laboratory equipment is calibrated and functioning properly.
Education/Experience
This position requires at least a Bachelor Degree in Chemistry or equivalent. Must have the ability to work in a fast pace environment, to work at different projects at the same time, and to think analytically. In addition, must have good prioritization and communication skills (oral and writing). Must be involved, careful, precise, team player, flexible, result/customer oriented and takes initiative.
Language Ability
A good command of the English language is mandatory. Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
Computer Skills
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Word Processing software; Spreadsheet software; Internet software and Database software.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job the employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is occasionally exposed to work near moving mechanical parts. The associate must be able to safely work in a variety of potentially hazardous situations. As our next process development associate, you will be an integral member of a multi-disciplinary team focused on the development of new products and processes utilizing Corbion's unique fermentation based technology.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Hands-on role in the setup, operation, and cleaning of bench and pilot scale experiments and equipment, with focus on upstream cultivation of microorganisms and hand-off of fermentation broth to downstream operations.
* Work on lab and pilot-scale processes emphasizing upstream cultivation operations including media preparation, aseptic operations, fermenter setup, seed train development in flasks and fermenters, main fermentation operations for product formation, etc.
* Operate lab and pilot equipment and processes independently, including operational support of fermentation processes over weekends.
* Conduct analytical methods required to monitor processes and materials; hands-on skills with instrumental analysis and wet chemistry.
* Provide detailed observations of experiments. Record data and assist with the analysis of results.
* Write test protocols, SOP's and reports.
* Work within a team framework, with both individual responsibility and support of other scientists. Works closely with the Process Development, R&D, Facilities and Manufacturing Groups.
* Maintains process area and equipment in good working order.
* Support site and operations activities as needed, for example ordering and stocking supplies, conducting maintenance and equipment service, and coordinating activities with vendors.

REQUIREMENTS:
* Qualified applicants will possess a A.A. or B.A./B.S. in a technical field (Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology or a related field), with 2+ years industrial experience with relevant unit operations, or no degree of the like, but at least 5 years of relevant experience.
* Flexible work schedule including weekends. Must be able to work an adjusted weekday schedule with work days from Sunday to Thursday; Friday and Saturday would be OFF-days. Ability to shift work days to accommodate operation activities.
* Experience in operating, cleaning, and maintaining lab and pilot-scale bioprocessing equipment (autoclave, benchtop and sterilize-in-place fermenters, centrifuge, spectrophotometer, etc..) emphasizing cultivation of microbial broth/biomass and associated products produced by fermentation, preferred. Experienced with aseptic operations for cultivating microorganisms preferred.
* Prior experience in analyzing biological materials using common microbiological and wet chemistry methods (glucose, total sugars, dry cell weight, total solids, optical density of microbial cultures, etc.).
* Hands-on mechanical skills with operation and maintenance of bioprocessing and utility system equipment.
* Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. and/or use assistive measures to lift materials over 50 lbs.
* Excellent written and verbal communication.
* Able to work both independently in a multi-disciplinary environment and as a key teammate within an interdisciplinary team.
