The Jewish Federations of North America company history timeline

1939

UJA was founded in 1939 when several Jewish organizations merged their fundraising campaigns to provide relief to distressed European Jewish communities.

1992

In 1992, in the wake of the devastation wrought by Hurricane Andrew, federations around the United States collectively raised $2 million (the Miami federation raised $1.25 million alone) to help provide support services and rebuild south Florida for its victims, Jews and non-Jews alike.

1994

The system raised another $2.5 million after the 1994 Los Angeles earthquake.

1999

In 1999, the CJF merged with the United Jewish Appeal to become the United Jewish Communities.

2009

In October 2009, the UJC was renamed the Jewish Federations of North America.

2010

After a couple of years of lower staff layoffs in February 2010, new CEO Jerry Silverman laid off three senior vice presidents that made an estimated $750,000 to $1 million combined.

JFNA declined to run the decennial National Jewish Population Survey in 2010 due to re-prioritizing.

2021

In 2021, it announced the $54 million LiveSecure campaign, which it described as the largest campaign to secure North America's Jewish communities in history.
