The Kansas City Country Club company history timeline

1896

Founded on May 1, 1896, The Kansas City Country Club is one of the oldest country clubs west of the Mississippi River.

1907

1907– J.C. Nichols begins buying land for the Country Club Plaza and eventually buys a total of 55 acres for more than $1 million.

1916

In 1916 Clarence A. Chandler, founder of the floral operation, decided to build the steam-heated green-house as pictured.

The white building with the smoke stack was the first building on the site, built in 1916 before J.C. Nichols acquired it.

1923

“In 1923, Work Began on First Block of Country Club Plaza.” Midtown KC Post.

1925

1925– Then-Plaza manager Charles Pitrat hangs the Plaza’s first string of lights on the Mill Creek Building to celebrate the holidays, and the merchants decorate the sidewalks with miniature Christmas trees.

1926

1926– Police department experiments with mounted patrol on the Plaza.

When the land was sold in 1926 the Club relocated to its current location in Mission Hills, Kansas.

1930

1930– Inaugural Plaza lighting ceremony.

1950

By the 1950's, the land had been abandoned and it wasn't until 40 years later that the golf course would be modified to take in the land and also provide for a wonderful practice facility.

1977

Even after a massive flood that caused significant damage to the plaza on September 12, 1977, the district quickly recovered and most of its merchants rebuilt their shops.

1998

1998– J.C. Nichols Co. closes $570 million merger with Highwoods Properties, Inc.

2015

2015– Highwoods announces plans to sell Plaza.

2016

2016– Taubman Centers Inc. and The Macerich Co. form a joint venture to buy the Plaza for $660 million.
