Massachusetts MENTOR was founded in 1980 by E. Byron Hensley, a social worker who believed that children and adolescents in the state’s care were best served in family homes with specially trained Mentor foster parents.
By 1983, Massachusetts MENTOR was one of the first community-based providers in the country that offered people with developmental disabilities an opportunity to live in homes as opposed to institutions.
MENTOR Maryland began as a single service provider in 1990, serving children with developmental disabilities in our therapeutic foster care program.
In 2003, MENTOR Maryland partnered with Family Advocacy Services, a local Maryland provider, serving children at risk and families through a range of treatment services and community-based environments.
