The Moorings company history timeline

1969

1969 – On Fourth of July weekend, The Moorings begins operations in Tortola, British Virgin Islands.

Our story began in 1969 when Navy veteran and sailing enthusiast Charlie Cary decided to turn his passion into a new business.

Starting with just six monohulls in 1969, The Moorings fleet now expands across the globe with more than 400 active yachts.

1970

In 1970, construction of The Moorings Yacht & Country Club golf course, designed by Pete Dye, was started.

1971

By 1971, only The Billows and a few houses existed east of Florida Route A1A, with no development west of A1A.

Leonor and her husband, Jorge Gonzalez, moved to the property in 1971 with Jorge heading and using the soil to create fingers of land extending into the Indian River.

1972

The Moorings of Vero Property Owners' Association, Inc. (MPOA) was organized in 1972 when Jorge Gonzalez conveyed nearly three acres of valuable beachfront property to the MPOA. That property includes the Tiki Huts, barbecue pits, a parking lot and pathways permitting Atlantic Ocean beach access.

In 1972, the golf course, South Passage and some homes along Windward Way and Mooringline Drive were completed.

1977

North Passage and Windward were begun by 1977, followed by West Passage, Porpoise Bay Villas and Harbour Side.

1981

1981 – The Moorings expands into the lower Caribbean with a base in Marigot Bay, St Lucia.

1984

1984 – The Moorings opens in Tahiti and Kingdom of Tonga.

1989

1989 – The company begins to market charters in Greece and in the eastern Mediterranean.

1991

Management of The Moorings common areas was then turned over to the MPOA. MDC transferred ownership of The Moorings Yacht & Country Club properties to the Club's membership in 1991.

1992

The Moorings Yacht Club (MYC) became an official part of The Moorings Yacht & Country Club in 1992, as well as a member of the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs.

1993

1993 – The yacht sales division opens a brokerage office in Ft.

1994

In 1994, the ocean-to-river community was turned over to the homeowners and it has thrived ever since, with a wide range of housing choices, a beautiful country club with golf, tennis and yachting, and the best deep-water residential home sites on the barrier island.

1997

1997 – Nine Moorings 4500 catamarans are added to the fleet.

2000

2000 – The Moorings adds new monohulls to its fleet including the Moorings 474 and 473 yachts.

2001

2001 – The Moorings opens bases in Belize and Turkey.

2002

2002 – The Moorings opens a new Grenadines base in Canouan and announces new bases in the Seychelles and Lefkas, Greece.

2003

2003 – The Moorings announces opening of new bases in Trogir and Dubrovnik, Croatia.

The last development, Sea Mist Court, was finished in 2003.

2005

The Moorings 4000 wins “Boat of the Year 2005”, “Best Monohull 40’ and under,” and “Best Overall Import.” The Moorings website honored by Boats.com and the NMMA. NauticBlue Power Yacht Vacations awarded “Best of the Year” by Motorboating Magazine.

2005 – The Moorings announces new Preferred Partnership with Sailitalia in Italy providing five Italian bases.

The Club's present Clubhouse opened in 2005.

2006

2006 – The Moorings launches the new Moorings 4600 catamaran and 51.5 monohull.

2007

2007 – The Moorings 41.3 monohull wins “Boat of the Year” from Cruising World magazine.

2008

VeroNews.com is the breaking news website of Vero Beach 32963 Media, LLC. Launched in 2008, VeroNews.com has the largest professional news-gathering staff, and is the leading online source of local news in Vero Beach, Sebastian, Fellsmere, and Indian River County.

2009

The Moorings 43.3 monohull is recognized as “2009 Boat of The Year” by Cruising World Magazine.

2009 – The addition of more new bases to The Moorings portfolio – Agana in Croatia, Orhaniye in Turkey and Phuket in Thailand.

2010

2010 – The Moorings 54.5, the new flagship of the monohull fleet, arrives in Tortola.

2011

2011 – The Moorings introduces the new Moorings 3900 catamaran.

2013

2013 – The Moorings 4800 Catamaran becomes available for bareboat charters and is named “Boat of the Year” by Cruising World Magazine.

2017

2017 – The Moorings partners with the 35th America’s Cup as an official charter supplier in Bermuda.

2021
