National Golf Club company history timeline

1970

American Golf Corporation (AGC) was founded by David G. Price, who purchased his first golf course in 1970.

1981

More bunkers have been built on the course and the number of contours on the greens was reduced when the type of grass on the greens was changed in 1981 from Bermuda grass to Bent grass which provided a faster playing surface.

1991

By 1991, AGC managed about 80 public golf courses in 20 states, as well as a handful of private ones.

1993

By 1993, the company had 14 courses that were substantially more upscale than most of its others.

Consequently, David Price formed a new company, National Golf Properties, Inc., in 1993.

National Golf Properties had been the only REIT of its kind when it went public in 1993.

By 1993 all 750 memberships in The National had been sold, and the Club had freehold ownership of a world class golf course and associated Clubhouse facilities and amenities.

1996

By 1996, National Golf had spent more than $300 million to buy up some 70 more golf courses.

1998

By 1998 it had several competitors, including Meditrust Inc. and Golf Trust of America.

1999

In 1999 it acquired a group of 48 courses known as the Cobblestone Golf Group from its competitor Meditrust.

2000

The course was built in 2000 and quickly became known for its impressive layout and immaculate course conditions.

The subsidiary was said to be consistently profitable, bringing in annual revenue of £33 million by 2000.

2001

By 2001 the firm owned two Australian courses.

The company studied the Japanese golf scene for two years before closing on its first management contract there in 2001.

2006

Long before the club opened on July 4, 2006, a 40-foot scaffolding was placed over where the 18th green was imagined by course architects Tom Kite and Bob Cupp.

Ranked among “The 101 Best Golf Experiences in the West” by Fairways & Greens (2006)

2014

In November 2014, a vote was put to the members of The National Golf Club and Long Island Country Club to effectively merge and form one Club.

2018

Members of this great golf club commemorated the wonderful achievements of The National with a weekend of celebrations in March 2018 on the anniversary of 30 years of play on the Old course.
