Earlier, Douglas served as staff associate and senior research staff assistant in the microbiology and biology departments of Columbia University from 1990 to 1996, working on Drosophila genetics, the retrotransposable element copia, and on molecular biology of HIV-1. Doug earned a bachelors degree in biology at Washington University in 1984, and studied in the M.D. program at OU School of Medicine, the Masters of Liberal Arts program at Washington University in St. Louis, and the Ph.D. program in philosophy at Columbia University at various points in his career.
