1, 1866, when Norristown natives Howard M. Jenkins and Wilmer Atkinson published the first edition of the Daily Commercial.
Our collection of newspapers on microfilm begins in 1871.
Another predecessor to the News Journal was the Morning Herald, founded in 1876 by Philadelphia lawyer John O'Byrne.
In 1877, that paper was absorbed into a rival, the Every Evening, founded by Georgetown native William T. Croasdale.
In 1888, Charles W. Edwards and Frederick Eden Bach founded the Evening Journal to compete with the Every Evening.
It later became the Daily Morning News, bought by Alfred I. Du Pont in 1911.
Ownership of both papers was consolidated in 1919 when feuding factions of the family reconciled, forming the News Journal Company.
In 1927, The News-Journal Co. became a wholly owned subsidiary of the Christiana Securities Co., a holding company for Du Pont Co. stock.
After the Du Pont company dissolved Christiana Securities and announced that it was no longer in the newspaper business, it sold the holdings to the Gannett Co. for $60 million in 1978.
DuPont decided to sell The News Journal Company in 1978.
The Librarians on staff have created an index of top stories from the local newspapers from 1989 to the present.
Gannett paid $60 million for the two Delaware papers and merged them in 1989 to form one paper, The News Journal.
