1922

Born on November 9th, 1922, she was the daughter of African American entertainer, Ruby Dandridge.

1937

Dorothy appeared in her first film in 1937, called A Day at the Races.

1944

Angela Davis was born January 26, 1944 in Birmingham, Alabama and is still alive today.

1947

Robinson broke the baseball color line when the Brooklyn Dodgers started him at first base on April 15, 1947.

1949

In 1949, Maxine Timmons began a 17 year stint as a 6th grade and music teacher at Orchard School.

1950

In 1950, Woodson died suddenly of a heart attack.

1954

At first, Clay wasn’t very good at boxing but he won his first match in 1954, six weeks after he started.

In 1954 she starred in the all black production of Carmen Jones.

Oprah Winfrey was born in 1954 in Mississippi, to a very poor teenage mother.

1955

In the summer of 1955, 14-year-old Emmett Till travelled from Chicago to visit relatives in Mississippi.

1960

On February 1, 1960 at a Woolworth’s lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina, that was designated “Whites Only.” The start of a movement began.

Ruby Bridges was very brave when she was the first black student to go to an all-white school in New Orleans in 1960.

1962

She is most known for helping with the mission of astronaut John Glenn, the first man to orbit the earth in 1962.

Robinson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962.

1964

He also became increasingly political, converting to the Nation of Islam and, in 1964, taking the name Muhammad Ali.

1969

A wing of the school building opened in September 1969.

1971

The Elbers farm that the founders chose as a site had already been the nexus of a farm/village community since 1971.

1972

After his death in 1972, in recognition of his achievements on and off the field, Robinson was posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal and Presidential Medal of Freedom.

1973

Old Orchard School was established in 1973 by founder Dannie Weston.

1986

By 1986, the school began hosting the Indiana Japanese Language School.

1990

In 1990, The Orchard School and Community Center was founded by three friends, Eleanor Elbers, Kathy Torrey, and Kathleen Vetter, who shared a vision of a community place for gathering, growing and learning.

1994

In February of 1994, planning to erect a 2500 square foot building started.

1999

A black actress would not win an Academy Award for best actress until 48 years later when Halle Berry, who played the role of Dorothy in a biopic film in 1999 about her life, would win for the film Monster’s Ball.

2002

When he won his Oscar in 2002, Halle Berry also won an Oscar for Best Actress, making it the first time both awards were won by African Americans.

2003

Bonnie Weston joins Old Orchard as Assistant Head of School, assuming full responsibility as Head of school in 2003.

2004

In 2004, the Federal Bureau of Investigation reopened the case, and a full autopsy was completed.

2005

Nipsey Russell died of stomach cancer in 2005.

2008

2013

In 2013, Winfrey was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom (the nation's highest civilian honor) by President Barack Obama.

2016

In 2016, he won the Cecil B. DeMille award for his outstanding contribution to the world of entertainment.

Woodson’s work continues to be an inspiration today; in 2016, President Barack Obama made his last proclamation in honor of Woodson.

In 2016, the Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crimes Reauthorization Act was enacted.

2019

February 7, 2019: Reegan Homburg’s 5th grade advisory | Denzel Washington Denzel Washington is an actor, director, and producer.

February 14, 2019: Ryan Mossakowski’s 8th grade advisory | Sojourner Truth Sojourner Truth was an African American evangelist, abolitionist, and women’s rights activist.

February 15, 2019: Suellen Sharp’s 5th grade advisory | W.E.B. Du Bois W.E.B. Du Bois was a civil rights activist.

February 17, 2019: Jeffrey Berry’s 8th grade advisory | Benjamin Banneker Benjamin Banneker was a mathematician, astronomer, as well as an architect and surveyor.

February 19, 2019: Erica Christie’s 7th grade advisory | Doctor Carter G. Woodson Doctor Carter G. Woodson is considered the father of Black History Month.

February 25, 2019: David Oyama’s 5th grade advisory | Doctor Mae Jemison Dream big and don't let anyone stand in your way: Even as a little girl, Doctor Mae Jemison knew she would get to go to space.
