The Paideia School company history timeline

1971

Paideia was started in 1971 by a small group of parents who wanted a school that educated children with respect for their individuality.

It opened in 1971, which is technically not the sixties.

The Paideia School was founded in 1971.

1973

In 1973 the school purchased the adjoining property and added a high school program.

1985

In response to many requests for training, Doctor Adler formed the Paideia Associates in 1985.

1988

The National Paideia Center was founded in 1988 at the University of North Carolina by philosopher Mortimer Adler and then University President William Friday.

1991

In 1991 members of the original Paideia Group and Associates formed the Paideia Group Inc. (PGI) to monitor and guide the development and spread of the Paideia concept of education.

1993

In 1993, Terry Roberts was hired to revive the largely dormant Center (he continues to serve as director of the NPC today). Over the next ten years, the NPC experienced an expansion in both budget and programming and was able to increase dramatically its impact on public school practice.

2004

In 2004, Paul Bianchi, head of school, gave a speech at the faculty and staff retreat about the beginnings of Paideia School.

2013

Over the past few decades, the NPC has evolved through several different organizational structures as well as staffing models, culminating in its establishment as a non-profit school improvement organization in 2013, fully independent of the UNC system.
