The Philadelphia School company history timeline

1972

The Philadelphia School (TPS) was founded in 1972 by a group of parents who wanted to nurture the natural curiosity and intellect of children.

1975

On August 7, 1975, United States District Court Judge Clarence C. Newcomer ruled that Central must admit academically qualified girls starting in the fall term of 1975.

With this renewed academic orientation and the moving of the social sciences to the School of Arts and Sciences in 1975, Wharton has since been able to concentrate on what it has always excelled in, and what it was founded to do: giving students an unrivaled business education.

1983

In September 1983,the first six girls, all seniors, were admitted.

Constance Clayton, first black superintendent appointed in 1983, proposed “modified desegregation plan” that depended mostly on voluntary participation

1994

The multimillion-dollar art, science, and physical education addition was officially dedicated on February 17, 1994.

1998

Two lawsuits were filed by the city and the Philadelphia School District in l997 and 1998 to address these inadequate funding levels.

2000

Chronic low achievement on the PSSA test in Philadelphia was addressed by the state legislature in 2000.

From l995-2000, RFA, in partnership with the Consortium for Policy Research in Education, conducted a five-year evaluation of the Children Achieving reforms. back

2001

Financial Roots of the Takeover The state takeover of the Philadelphia School District in December, 2001 has its roots in the chronic low test scores of district students and a history of inequitable financing which left the District with substantial and perpetual deficits in recent years.

2001 SRC — School Reform Commission, made possible by the Education Empowerment Act, brought an end to local control of public education

First phase: Summer - Fall 2001 In summer 2001, the state announced plans to take over the district due to both financial and academic achievement failures.

2002

Finally, an additional factor layered on top of the previous local and state initiatives is No Child Left Behind (NCLB), the far-reaching federal education law passed in January, 2002 that specifies a series of consequences for schools and districts that do not meet its goals.

Second phase: Winter - Spring 2002 The expectation that Edison would be appointed to manage such a large number of Philadelphia schools without any formal selection process became the focus of significant student and community protest.

Summer 2002: The arrival of Paul Vallas Until mid summer of 2002, the SRC was the main actor in the takeover of the Philadelphia School District.

2005

The Barnwell library is now one of the most advanced public school libraries in the United States since the $12 million renovation that was completed in 2005.

2011

When school reformers look at Philadelphia’s situation in 2011, they see too many old and inadequate buildings.

2013

As of 2013, Central High School’s score on the Pennsylvania school performance profile is a 101.3 out of a possible 100 non bonus point score.

In 2013, Peirce College launched its first master’s degree program, marking the latest milestone in the rich history of one of America’s oldest colleges.
