The Phoenix Group company history timeline

1857

The company was founded in 1857 as The Pearl Loan Company and operated from the Royal Oak Public House opposite the Whitechapel Bell Foundry.

1864

1864- Pearl Life Assurance Loan and Investment Company Limited was established.

1866

1866 – British Workman’s Association (renamed Britannic Assurance) was established.

1984

1984 – Sun Alliance acquired Phoenix Assurance.

1989

1989 – London Life merged with Australian Mutual Provident Society (AMP).

1994

More than two decades ago, in 1994, Adolf Merckle founded the PHOENIX group; the company’s beginnings date back more than one hundred years.

1995

1995 – AMP closed London Life to new Business.

1996

1996 – Royal Insurance and Sun Alliance merged to become Royal & Sun Alliance.

1999

1999 – AMP acquired NPI.

In 1999 Comifar takes the control of Spem of Segrate, franchising model company.

2003

The contract for the acquisition of Medifarm Velebit, the fourth largest pharmaceutical wholesaler, is also signed at the end of December 2003.

2003 – AMP closed Life Companies to new business and demerged them as HHG with Henderson Investors.

2004

As a part of the merger, the two companies acquired , Farmacija and Medifarm-Velebit, are renamed into PHOENIX Farmacija on 1 November 2004.

2005

2005 – Resolution Life Group Ltd merged with Britannic Group plc and became Resolution PLC.

In 2005, the Pearl Group was bought from Henderson Group by Sun Capital Partners (a business in which Hugh Osmond is a leading partner) and TDR Capital.

Acquisition of the wholesaler Viafarma, shares in the Czech company Europharm, and the majority share in the wholesaler Farmaceutica Bolognese. Italy Farmaceutica Bolognese (Emilia Romagna) merged in Comifar Distribuzione, after a first acquisition of 40% in 2005.

2006

2006 – Resolution PLC acquired Abbey National plc’s Life businesses.

2008

2008 – Pearl Group Ltd acquired Resolution PLC and sold open business of Scottish Mutual Assurance Ltd & Scottish Provident Ltd.

2009

2009 – Liberty Acquisition Holdings (International) acquired Pearl Group Ltd.

2012

Rating In summer 2012, rating agencies Fitch and Standard & Poor’s upgraded the bond rating by two notches to “BB”.

2013

Germany PHOENIX awarded for "Best pharmacy partner 2013."

2014

In March 2014, the business sold Ignis Asset Management to Standard Life Investments, the asset management arm of Standard Life.

2016

2016 – Phoenix Group acquired Abbey Life.

2018

In 2018, Phoenix Group agreed to acquire Standard Life Assurance from Standard Life Aberdeen for £2.9 billion.

2020

In July 2020, Phoenix completed the acquisition of fellow closed book specialist ReAssure Group from Swiss Re.

2021

On 23 February 2021 it was announced that Phoenix had acquired the rights to the Standard Life brand and had undertaken additional steps to simplify the relationship with Standard Life Aberdeen that had developed since the acquisition of the Standard Life business three years previously.
