The Phoenix Symphony company history timeline

1947

Founded in 1947, the Phoenix Symphony is Arizona’s largest performing arts organization presenting classical and pops concerts at Symphony Hall in downtown Phoenix as well as throughout central Arizona from September through the beginning of early June.

1972

The Symphony came of age in 1972 when it moved into the newly built Symphony Hall and hired Mexico City native Eduardo Mata as conductor.

1983

In 1983, the orchestra achieved full-time status.

1989

In 1989 when TPS named James Sedares as director, he became the youngest music director in any major symphony in America.

2010

It’s been a successful formula for the Phoenix Symphony and Phoenix Theatre, which first teamed up in 2010 with a concert performance of “The Music Man” at Symphony Hall.

2011

Starring as Eliza Doolittle is soprano Jeannie Shubitz, who first played the role at Arizona Broadway Theatre in 2011.

2014

Tito Muñoz: 2014 - Present

2021

The Phoenix Symphony has announced its 2021-22 season in celebration of its 75th anniversary.
