1921

After 28 years, Berry and Mattie sold the hotel in 1921.

1931

Berry died at the age of 76 in 1931.

1961

“They resurfaced the outside and tried to rent it as a hotel, but it declined,” Hollow said. “In 1961, the university bought it as a dormitory.”

1973

In 1973, Athens City Council wanted to tear down the Berry Hotel to make it a parking lot.

1974

Ford-Ahmed believes there are many topics of historical importance, one being the destruction of the nationally renowned Berry Hotel in 1974.

1995

In 1995, Phi Kappa Theta moved into the Berry House.

2002

Marcquis Parham, the interim assistant director of the Career and Leadership Development Center, came to Ohio University in 2002 as a football player.

2013

The group working to turn it into these things is The Mount Zion Baptist Church Preservation Society. It was launched as a non-profit in 2013, and it formed a board to help direct the mission and vision of renovating and restoring the historical monument.

2015

In 2015, the paper announced it would be moving to a digital-first model.

2019

Ohio University alumna @universityhairbraider on Instagram is a 2019 graduate who learned to braid after having to wear headscarves and other protective hairstyles to avoid the hassle of traveling all the way to Columbus for services during her time at OU.

2021

She realized that many students of color don’t have access to the hair care products they need, so Morgan and the organization created a drive for hygiene products and hair care products in early June 2021.
