The Red Lion Inn company history timeline

1807

In 1807, Anna Bingham sold the eight-room inn to store owner Silas Pepoon.

1840

Historically speaking, Federal architecture dominated American cities and towns during the nation’s formative years, which historians best identify as lasting from 1780 to 1840.

1842

Before joining IT&T, he was the Resident Manager of the Americana Hotel (1842 Rooms), General Manager of the Drake Hotel (680 Rooms) and General Manager of the Summit Hotel (762 Rooms), all in New York City.

1850

4, 1850, Longfellow purchased the adjoining 36 ½ acres from his father-in-law for $2,800.

1862

Over time, the Inn changed hands many times and in 1862 Charles and Mert Plumb began a ninety-year family ownership dynasty.

1873

In 1873, following a succession of owners, the Inn was purchased by Mr. and Mrs.

1884

By 1884, it was known as the Stockbridge House and had been enlarged to accommodate 100 guests.

1896

But tragedy struck in 1896, when a structural accident compromised the Stockbridge House.

From the Red Lion Inn's inception until it was leveled by fire in 1896, its crest was a red lion waving a green tail.

1953

Having lived all around the county, Rockwell evenutally decided to settle in Stockbridge in 1953.

1962

THE RED LION INN was built by Marge and Larry Burdick in 1962.

1963

The doors opened in mid-February 1963.

1967

1967: Famous artist and Stockbridge native Norman Rockwell immortalized the Red Lion Inn within his greater painting, Stockbridge Mainstreet at Christmas.

1968

In 1968, Stockbridge residents Jack and Jane Fitzpatrick bought the property.

1969

On May 29, 1969, the Inn was opened for year-round business for the first time.

1974

In 1974, several nearby buildings, including the former village firehouse, were purchased to be used as guesthouses.

1980

IN 1980, THE BURDICKS sold the Red Lion Inn.

2000

In November 2000, The Red Lion was purchased by a new group of locals.

2013

2013: Jane Fitzpatrick passed away, leaving The Red Lion Inn to her daughter, Nancy Fitzpatrick, and her granddaughter, Sarah Eustis.

2014

Turkel was designated as the “2014 Historian of the Year by Historic Hotels of America,” the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
