1893

That period culminated in 1893 with the opening of the lavish Grunewald Hotel, built by Bavarian-born businessman Louis Grunewald to replace the Grunewald Hall performing arts center.

1907

At the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve 1907, a 400-room, 14-story annex opened to chimes and whistles.

1908

In 1908, it was expanded with a fourteen-story 400-room annex.

1923

In 1923, he began his rapid ascent within the newly renamed Roosevelt from barbershop manager, to assistant manager, to general manager.

1935

Long intended to challenge President Franklin Roosevelt in 1935 for the Democratic Party nomination for the presidency but he was assassinated in Baton Rouge.

1965

The Roosevelt was acquired by First Class Hotels in 1965 who changed its name to Fairmont Roosevelt and later Fairmont New Orleans.

2005

The Fairmont New Orleans was severely damaged in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina and was closed for more than four years.
