Pros of working at The Salvation Army

I was able to assist and supervise in a field that meant so much to me (youth). As a member of the church, a volunteer, and a salvation army worker, I genuinely experienced the art of hard work! The people were amazing and I was given so much joy doing what I loved.

Cons of working at The Salvation Army

I didn’t enjoy the lack of communication, organization, and foundation of some of the programs.

The Salvation Army benefits

My favorite benefit was being able to wake up every morning and do what I love which is working with children and assisting in that field as much as I was able too!!

A few questions please: (1) Do they provide coffee and snick snacks for its employees? (2) Do you get a lot of homeless people loitering around the store and making stool in your restrooms? (3) Are there shoplifters there? (4) What do you think of the Moody Blues? (5) Is the store a good place to meet broads? (6) Funniest thrift store story? Scariest thrift store story? (7) Do the linens come to the store with all kinds of mystery stains/smells? (8) Why don't thrift stores sell sex toys or underwears? (9) Are there weirdos that work witchoo? (10) Do you pilfer from the store? (11) Let's say it's me, you, and a gang of 2 others and we've devised a plan to burglarize the thrift store. What would the plan be? What time of night or day would we break in? Would we cut through the roof, side door, what? What section do we hit first to make the most for our efforts? - Thanks!!

1. Sometimes they have snacks here and there. But I heard those were for the beneficiaries. Sometimes they bring in cake or pizza on special days. No coffee. 2. I don't clean the restrooms. No I don't think so. I'm in the back so I don't get to see everybody. But nope, haven't seen any homeless as far as I am aware of. 3. Definitely a lot of shop lifters. It is super easy to shop lift. People sometimes switch tags too. 4. I don't know what the moody blues are. Is that music? 5. I actually do see some pretty hot babes come in. If you're good at sweet talking, then yeah sure, its a good place to meet women I suppose. 6. I don't really have a funniest story. I guess my coworker telling me the story of how she used to be a lesbian but god helped her turn straight. 7. Yes, they do. Tons of weird funky smells and stains. 8. I guess because sex toys have been used before? We do sell underwear. That is a good question, I don't know. I don't deal with donations though. 9. Definitely. 10. I used to. I could easily steal little things here and there, never got caught. But deep down, I knew it was wrong so I just stopped. Now I only steal office supplies and trash they are throwing away. 11. I would steal the keys and let you guys go in at one in the morning. Or put a piece of wood at the door. Easy.

I don't support the Salvation Army due to their homophobic stance and lobbying. Did knowing this fact factor into you choosing to work there at all?

I had no idea about any of that honestly. Religion is never even brought up. Nobody really even asked me about my religion. To me, its just a job. I don't see religion anywhere. Except cashiers do offer free complimentary bibles. I just wanted a job. I don't discriminate against anyone or have to.

Have you had to defend yourself about this? And have you experienced any cognitive dissonance? If so, how do you deal with it?

I've had to defend the atheist part of myself, yes. Have had several discussions with co-workers regarding faith, religion, and god all in one go. They look at me like I need to find Jesus on a regular basis. I was invited to services at their regional office/halfway house, which I politely declined. The invitation is a weekly occurrence.
