1970

The Sportsman's Guide was founded in the year 1970.

1975

He introduced a 16-page catalog in 1975.

1977

1977: Business incorporates as Olen Company, Inc.

1985

By 1985, Sportsman's Guide sales reached $8.4 million.

1986

In 1986, the catalog merchandiser bagged sales of $14 million.

Rising, Falling Fortunes: 1986--90

1987

In another move, Sportsman's Guide acquired the assets of P & S Sales, Inc. of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, during 1987.

1987: First spring/summer catalog leads to near disaster.

1989

Three creditors had filed an involuntary bankruptcy petition in April 1989.

1993

In response, Sportsman's Guide introduced wider margin products: military surplus in late 1993 and manufacturers' closeout merchandise the following year.

1994

New customers, gained mainly from rented mailing lists, made up about 30 percent of 1994 sales.

1995

The Sportsman's Guide Buyer's Club Advantage Catalog was introduced in January 1995.

1996

With the Vista deal dead, business proceeded as usual, or at least as usual for this cataloger. 'Sportsman's Guide has few, if any exact competitors,' wrote Jennifer Waters in a 1996 Minneapolis/St Paul CityBusiness article. 'Think about it.

1997

Back in July 1997, Sportsman's Guide announced plans for an additional stock offering to repay stockholders who supported the company during the reorganization period, but the offer was delayed due to the UPS strike.

During 1997, Sportsman's Guide opened a second retail outlet to help move excess product.

1999

During the first quarter of 1999, Sportsman's Guide began posting all of its catalogs on the Internet, thus becoming one of the first catalogers to make the move.

2003

Business-to-consumer online transactions were predicted to exceed $60 billion by 2003, and Sportsman's Guide already was stalking its share.

2011

Then, in 2011, the company launched the ‘worldwide’ website in over 90 countries, making it possible to convert currencies and accept international orders.
