Present constitution adopted: 1859
By 1883, following several conflicts with the United States settlers, most of the Native Americans of Oregon had been moved to reservations.
To placate these potential rebels, free blacks were constitutionally forbidden from entering Oregon, and only a handful of them migrated there before the late 19th century, when the exclusion law was relaxed—although it was not formally repealed until 1926.
Motto: Alis volat Propriis (She flies with her own wings) (1987)
In 2012's Gallup's ideological survey, Oregon was ranked the third bluest (most liberal) state behind Washington DC and Massachusetts.
