1881

1887

Established by the Texas Legislature in 1887 under the federal Hatch Act, Texas A&M AgriLife Research (formerly the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station) continues to represent a unique state-federal partnership in agricultural research.

1896

The University Co-Op, which is almost as old as the university itself, began operations in 1896 in a space 10 feet by 20 feet under the stairway of the second floor of the Main Building.

1900

Around 1900, the University's Bureau of Economic Geology began to investigate the possibility of finding oil and gas on university lands.

1914

Texas A&M Forest Service was established in 1914, as a way to provide resources to develop and protect the forested areas of Texas.

The Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station was also created in 1914 with a research and technology transfer mission for the field of engineering.

1916

In 1916, although most other geologists disagreed, the University's Doctor Johan A. Udden reported that oil could be found lying atop an underground fold of rock that was believed to run from the Marathon area through Pecos County and into Upton and Reagan counties.

1917

John Tarleton Agricultural College at Stephenville (now Tarleton State University) joined an earlier form of the A&M System in 1917.

1929

As its mission has expanded, its name has changed to reflect its wider scope. Its first name change, to Texas College of Arts and Industries, came in 1929.

1931

However, in 1931, the legislature split the net income, with two-thirds going to the University of Texas and one-third to Texas A&M University.

After a year working for the chemical industry in Birmingham, he joined the faculty of Imperial College in 1945, first as an assistant lecturer and later as a research fellow.

1948

The Texas A&M University System was created by the Texas Legislature in 1948 to manage the evolution of a statewide educational, research and service system.

The Texas A&M University System was officially established in 1948.

1958

In 1958 Barton collaborated on aldosterone with the Schering Corporation at its Research Institute for Medicine and Chemistry in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

1963

In 1963, the Texas state legislature officially renamed the school to Texas A&M University, with the "A" and "M" being a symbolic link to the school's past but no longer officially standing for "Agricultural and Mechanical."

When Texas A&M gained university status in 1963, the “A&M” was incorporated into the official name in deference to the institution’s history and traditions, but the individual letters no longer explicitly stand for anything.

1965

In 1965, the United States Department of Commerce, Maritime Administration provided a training ship for Texas Maritime Academy cadets.

Although designated as a land-grant college under the Morrill Act of 1862, the college emphasized classical studies, mathematics, and literature courses over science and vocational studies in its first few years. It was originally created as a military institution, and military training was required until 1965; the university has one of the largest Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) programs in the nation.

1969

Barton’s work unified many of the diverse findings about the chemical and biological behaviour of steroids that had been uncovered during the first half of the 20th century, and it was for this work that Barton received the Nobel Prize in 1969.

1984

The income was further split in 1984, when the legislature voted to include all institutions in the University of Texas System, not just the main university at Austin, and the entire Texas A&M University System.

1996

In 1996, three other institutions joined the A&M System: Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas and two former East Texas State University campuses, now Texas A&M University-Commerce and Texas A&M University-Texarkana.
