Patients in our unit have recently undergone cardiothoracic surgeries including coronary artery bypass, valve replacement, and heart transplants. Our nurses maintain competencies to manage advanced patient care therapies only offered in the Cardiothoracic Surgery ICU. Responds to call 24/7 as scheduled
Supports clinical operations within the liver transplant programs by performing essential functions of a transplant coordinator: Coordinating the clinical management of patient care under the supervision of transplant providers
Assures open and clear communication with patients, their families, and the health care team members
Rounds on inpatient units as needed
Coordinates and manages comprehensive clinical care of the patient throughout inpatient and outpatient phases of care

These nurses work with an experienced multi-disciplinary team, using the latest diagnostic and therapeutic techniques to help patients heal from burns, complex skin disorders, slow-to-heal wounds and reconstructive surgeries. Our Burnett Burn Center is an adult and pediatric verified burn center that provides acute and intensive inpatient care to those who need specialized treatment and rehab interventions.. The center features two hydrotherapy bays, an operating room suite, a nutrition center and a physical therapy gym. We also closely collaborate with the outpatient burn and wound care clinic to provide ongoing specialized wound care in the outpatient setting which may include hyperbaric oxygen therapy to enhance healing.

Cambridge 5 Neuro/ENT ICU
Patients who are critically ill with a neurological, neurosurgical, and head/neck disorders receive expert care from our Neurosciences and ENT Intensive Care team. Patients who are cared for in this unit have conditions such as acute ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, brain tumors, intracranial aneurysms, neuromuscular diseases, status epilepticus, and head and neck cancer. Because we have a Joint Commission Comprehensive Stroke Center, our physicians, nurses and other specialists are trained to recognize stroke symptoms and provide immediate help, improving outcomes for stroke patients. This is a fast paced unit that is a very rewarding experience for healthcare providers.
Some examples of the types of patient we care for include:
Craniotomy for tumors, arteriovenous malformations, and intracranial aneurysms
Spinal cord injury
Spine surgery
Movement disorders requiring surgical intervention (Parkinson's Disease, Essential Tremor, etc.)
Surgical intervention for chronic pain and/or spasticity management
Hydrocephalus
Acute Ischemic Stroke, Hemorrhagic Stroke, Subarachnoid Hemorrhage
Neuromuscular diseases requiring mechanical ventilation and support

Some traumatic brain injuries, when our Neurosurgery team is primary
Technology utilized in the CA5 ICU includes intracranial pressure monitoring (both intraparenchymal and intraventricular), Phillips cardiac and hemodynamic monitoring systems, Pupillometry, intracranial electrode seizure monitoring with advanced seizure detection equipment, and much more! Nurses with specialized training from the CA5 ICU staff the Acute Stroke Response Team and play an integral role in treatment of this medical emergency! Additionally, nurses from CA5 ICU are part of our Rapid Response and Code Blue team in the Cambridge tower. Nurses and care team members are integral to unit decision-making, nursing practice, and many are involved in Health System committees.

This state-of-the-art telemetry unit is dedicated to the care of the Neuroscience and Ear, Nose, & Throat (ENT) patient population. Nurses work with teams of Neuro-specialists in General Neurology, Stroke, Epilepsy, and Movement Disorders. Our ENT specialists include Otolaryngology and Head & Neck surgeries. This is unit is comprised of specialty services - Neurology, Stroke, Epilepsy, and Ear/Nose/Throat Surgeries. As specialties within the KU Health System, CA6 sees the most advanced treatment in the region for these areas. CA6 boasts being part of several top performing teams including a Level 4 Epilepsy Center, Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center, and KU's Neurology is ranked #31 by US News & World Report. CA6 received the Beacon Gold Award for Excellence in 2019 showcasing our unit's constant commitment to evidence-based care to continually improve our patients' outcomes.
CA6 works as a team unit, supporting each other so that every patient receives world class care. Resiliency, initiative, and teamwork are musts. CA6 is supportive, working closely with all interdisciplinary teams to manager patient care. Our staff takes pride in balancing bedside nursing skills (i.e. feeding tubes, drains, tracheostomies, wounds, altered mobility, pain management, etc.), interpersonal communication with teams and families, and compassionate care all while effectively managing their time in a fast paced work environment. Our nurses become experts in this field and value being able to be the support person for these patients and guiding them through their stay.
Our patients have complex medical and surgical needs. Nurses' ability to communicate effectively and patiently is imperative. Our patients' communication, movement, and normal daily living activities are greatly affected by our patient population's diagnoses (i.e. throat cancer/trach/laryngectomies, strokes, ALS, seizures, etc.). Our surgical population primarily includes our ENT patients. These patients require care for complex head and neck wounds including multiple drains, new airways, and microvascular tissue transfers. We care for ENT stepdown patients that are considered intermediate level of care requiring 3:1 ratio with competencies in arterial lines and tissue transfer dopplering. These patients tend to be highly anxious which makes calm interpersonal communication essential. Other common ENT surgeries are thyroidectomies, laryngectomies, sinus surgeries, and parotid tumor ectomies. CA6's Medical population includes Strokes with advanced interventional therapies, autoimmune neurological diseases such as Gillian-barre syndrome, myasthenia gravis, ALS, Multiple Sclerosis, etc. CA6 and KU's neurology department have a reputation of caring for complex and rare diseases, often having patients transferred to KU for our specific care. CA6 nurses receive specific stroke, epilepsy, and ENT competencies.Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions

CA7 - Neurosurgery and Surgical Oncology (CA7)
This state-of-the-art telemetry unit, located in Cambridge Tower A, encompasses a culture of teamwork and support in a fast-paced environment focused on making a difference in patient's lives. We focus on high quality metrics and safe, compassionate care to our patients with our multi-disciplinary partnerships. Our acuity includes a mid to high level patient population.
This surgical unit is dedicated to the care of the Neurosurgery and Surgical Oncology patient populations. Nurses will work with a team of Neurospecialists in Neurosurgery and nationally ranked surgeons specifically for Oncology patients. Our patient population includes, but is not limited to craniotomy for tumors, arteriovenous malformations, and intra cranial aneurysms, craniocerebral trauma, spinal cord injury, inter vertebral disk and bony abnormalities of the spine requiring surgical intervention, surgical intervention for chronic pain and/or spasticity management, hydrocephalus, hemorrhagic stroke, sub arachnoid hemorrhage, and patients requiring surgical intervention to alleviate symptoms, disorders, and cancer related to the pancreas, gastrointestinal system, thyroid and parathyroid glands, and other applicable systems/organs. Technology utilized in this state of the art unit will include telemetry monitoring systems, some hemodynamic monitoring, and specialized neurologic monitoring including pupillometry, external ventricular drainage, and lumbar drainage.
Our patient centered nursing team has a passion for this specialty and appreciates the challenges and rewards on our units. Our patients are so special and appreciative and have a unique perspective on life. Our nurse to patient ratio is typically 4:1 and nurses spend time working with patients on both units.
