Sewanee: The University of the South company history timeline
Two years later in 1859, they donated an additional 5,000 acres to the University instantly made the nascent University of the South one of the largest institutions of higher education in the country by acreage.
On October 10, 1860, the founders laid the cornerstone for a campus that would eventually grow to house 1,500 students on 13,000 forested acres.
In 1891 royal purple was adopted as the school color, and Sewanee played its first intercollegiate football game.
University of the South, known asSewanee, Private university in Sewanee, Tennessee, United States, founded in 1857. Its literary journal, The Sewanee Review, was founded in 1892.
The 1899 football team was undefeated, winning 12 straight games—including five games during a six-day, 3,000-mile road trip.
Its first management plan, created in 1899, was one of the first in the country to be written.
The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, hosts a dedication ceremony May 16, 1940, for a memorial to Confederate Gen.
Register, a native of Alabama, graduated from Sewanee in 1980 and has taught history at the university for 26 years. (He received his doctorate from Brown University, an early trailblazer among the Universities Studying Slavery.)
A 2005 New York Times story detailed changes Sewanee was making at that time to appeal to a more geographically and racially diverse pool of potential students – changes dismissed as destructive or unnecessary by some alumni.
In June 2006, Sewanee opened its School of Letters, a second graduate school.
That effort came just as the national conversation around Confederate symbols had deepened after a June 2015 shooting in Charleston, South Carolina, in which a gunman with Confederate sympathies murdered nine people at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.
In fall 2015, Sewanee removed a portrait of Leonidas Polk from public display.
By fall 2017, however, the work had grown in urgency.
