The Laboratory Assistant is responsible for assisting in the procurement, testing, and processing of laboratory specimens. The Laboratory Assistant provides data entry, supply inventory, and customer service support to facilitate specimen processing and result entry. The primary responsibilities for this position will vary by department and may include any or a combination of all) of the following:
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
* Enters and verifies test requests accurately and efficiently.
* Obtains, enters and verifies patient information accurately and efficiently.
* Assists with specimen storage, retrieval and disposal following standard precautions to abide by all regulatory policies and procedures.
* Performs technical duties to include: a) collects Fine Needle Aspirations; b) processes specimens according to test requirements; c) prepares Bone Marrow smears; d) prepares slide processing; e) performs instrument maintenance; f) prepares slide staining; g) performs thermometer calibration; h) performs plating specimens for Microbiology on various medias
* Prepares samples for appropriate transport to reference laboratory. Generates and reviews pending logs for outstanding specimen processing.
* Provides telephone support for notification of non-critical laboratory test values. Faxes and prints reports as needed.
* Assists staff with inventory management; rotates and restocks reagents and supplies as needed.
* Takes daily temperatures of laboratory refrigerators, freezers, and incubators as required. Performs required daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance and function checks as required for eyewash station, safety shower, plasma thawer, etc.
* Supports Department Supervisor with various projects and tasks as needed.
* Understands the complexities of specimen integrity and makes first line decisions regarding specimen acceptability.
* Properly washes and disinfects laboratory equipment and materials.
* Tracks and receives batches of specimens arriving from off-site locations assuring that each specimen is accounted for and adequate for testing.
* Operates and maintains operation of high volume centrifuges to include daily and weekly maintenance and disinfection as needed.
* Troubleshoots and documents specimen integrity issues and patient orders.
* Assists with the front phlebotomy desk duties as needed to include: answering the phones, coordination of stat orders with notification to the appropriate phlebotomist, answering of the pneumatic tube station and receiving of specimens into the lab system.
* Assists the Supervisor in the training of new staff regarding lab assistant and specimen processing duties.
* Monitors the performance of the automated track system in Chemistry and alerts techs when an issue arises and/or action is needed.
* Compares vendor invoices against inventory receipt to check for accuracy/errors in billing.
* Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
* Minimum high school diploma or equivalent required.
* Two years of previous clinical laboratory experience required or B.S. degree in a Biological Sciences or second year student in MLS or MLT clinical program.*
* For students in the Lab Assistant role, must complete MLS or MLT program within 2 years of hire.
* Basic computer skills required and previous experience with Microsoft Office preferred.
* Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
* Possess excellent customer service and problem-solving skills.

* Experience in educational methods and administration as well as current NAACLSS accreditation procedures and certification procedures.
* Minimum of thirty-six hours of continuing education in the past three years.

What you'll contribute:
Perform Specimen Process Activities | Play a key role in patient care by performing specimen processing tasks such as receiving, sorting, and prioritizing specimens and requests, matching specimens against requisitions for appropriate tube type, centrifuging and aliquoting specimens, processing timed urine collections, resulting and reviewing entries for all reference lab testing, performing blood draws on patients, and performing various computer functions.
Perform Customer Service | Exercise your customer service skills by responding promptly, courteously, and professionally to inquiries from patients, clients, and hospital and laboratory staff.
Share Your Knowledge | Impart your laboratory wisdom by orienting and training new employees, participate in performance improvement activities and support the hospital in meeting JCAHO, CLIA, and CAP accreditation standards.
Utilize Problem-Solving Skills | Resolve specimen and order-related problems in a timely, thorough, and accurate manner and provide appropriate documentation for supervisor review.
What you'll need:
* High school graduation or equivalent AND one (1) year of chemical, clinical, or public health laboratory experience
OR
* Completion of a laboratory assistant course approved by the American Society for Clinical Pathology
OR
* Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.
Additional DLMP requirement:
* Medical Assistant - Phlebotomist (MA-P) certification with the Washington State Department of Health OR obtain the MA-P certification within 180 days of start date.

**PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES**

CLT 1s are the critical first line in the Microbiology lab. They accession and process all the specimens, answer phone calls, keep track of pending monitors, and review orders in the Laboratory Information System and Electronic Health Record.

The Cardiac Catheterization Lab Technologist will assist physicians in the performance of effective patient therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. This position must demonstrate a commitment of quality service to our patients, the public and our co - workers.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
* Operates cardiac catheterization devices and support equipment to assist physicians in obtaining diagnostic information.
* Assists physicians as a sterile assistant in the performance of fluoroscopic catheterization procedures.
* Monitors the patient's ECG, hemodynamic status and other clinical signs during procedures to ensure patient safety during clinical procedures.
* Prepares and sets up patients for procedure. This includes all preparations necessary to ensure a quality clinical outcome for the patient.
* Monitors and maintains equipment and keeps it in working order to ensure continuous availability for clinical operations.
* Performs emergency patient care management responsibilities, in accordance with ACLS guidelines to ensure a quality clinical outcome for the patient.
Qualifications:
* High school graduate.
* Registered Cardiovascular Technologist preferred. RCIS or RCES certification required within 4 years of hire or placement
* Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, Electrophysiology Lab, or Special Procedures area preferred. Intensive Care or relevant health care field related experience considered.
* BLS certification required;
* ACLS certification within 90 days of employment
* ARRT registered in Radiologic Technology considered.
