The Weston Group history

In 1993 E.B. Eddy bought Island Paper Mills Co.

Weston executed a series of large scale liquidations of Mexican peso debt securities and forced Mexican Treasury auctions to be cancelled in March and April of 1994 while driving MXP Treasury Bill interest rates from 6% to 30% in a matter of weeks.

1995: National Tea is divested, completing the company's exit from United States food retailing.

1996: Neilson Cadbury, Weston's chocolate unit, is sold to Cadbury Schweppes PLC.

In September 1997 Weston announced that it planned to spin off the paper company through an initial public offering, but two months later shelved that plan because of turmoil in the stock market.

The addition of Provigo in particular led to a 41 percent jump in sales for George Weston in 1999 to CAD $20.85 billion.

George Weston strengthened its positioned in the baked goods industry in 2001 through the $1.77 billion purchase of Bestfoods Baking Co. from the Unilever Group.

Sales and profits at Loblaw began to falter, and in 2006 the company posted its first loss in 19 years.

In 2008 The Weston Group began the final stage of the goal of widespread meaningful results to the healthcare market.

2009 was the transition year after having widened the scope of TWG towards Healthcare Engineering focused on Information Technology.

Beginning in 2010, The Weston Group undertook the challenge of delivering more value in a much larger way to the healthcare industry.

Secondly, our clients’ outcome will result in Group TWG’s realization as the largest services delivery organization to the Healthcare Industry by 2012.

In 2017, as part of a long-term succession plan, Galen G. Weston was appointed CEO of George Weston Limited.

In 2018, as part of George Weston’s transformation initiative and on-going mission to drive shareholder value, the company completed a reorganization where Loblaw spun out its majority interest in Choice Properties to George Weston.
