The Wistar Institute is the nation's first independent institution devoted to medical research and training. The Wistar Institute has evolved from its beginnings as an anatomical teaching museum to its present-day status as an international leader in basic biomedical research. In 1972, The Wistar Institute was designated a National Cancer Institute Cancer Center in basic research-a distinction it holds to this day. Wistar discoveries have led to the development of vaccines for rabies, rubella, and rotavirus, the identification of genes associated with breast, lung, and prostate cancer, and the development of monoclonal antibodies and other significant research technologies and tools.
The staff at The Wistar Institute come from unusually diverse demographic backgrounds. The organization is 52.8% female and 44.1% ethnic minorities. Despite its diversity in other areas, The Wistar Institute employees are noticeably lacking in political diversity. It has an unusually high proportion of employees who are members of the Democratic Party, at 93.0%. Employees seem to enjoy working in an otherwise diverse workplace that is dominated by members of the Democratic Party. The Wistar Institute has great employee retention with staff members usually staying with the organization for 4.2 years.
The Wistar Institute is a small non profits organization based in Philadelphia, PA with only 200 employees and an annual revenue of $69.0M.
