Job DescriptionJob description

The primary purpose of the Therapeutic Recreation Assistant is to provide recreational activities for residents in a 120 bed center by assisting in planning, conducting evaluation and participating in one on one and group activity programs. Ensures a safe environment and comply with center policies and state/federal requirements.

Education & Qualifications of the Therapeutic Recreation Therapist Assistant:

*Must have TRD (Therapeutic Recreation Degree Certificate) or Degree equivalent*.

Graduate of an accredited high school or GED preferred.

Artistic background or previous instruction from a certified activity consultant

Ability to lead group programs

Ability to work independently or part of a group.

Effectively communicate with others.

Experience: Recreation Therapist

Previous long-term care or experience working with the elderly or disabled is desirable

Computer experience using Windows based software preferred.

Specific Requirements: Recreation Therapist

Must possess the ability to make independent decision when circumstances warrant such action.

Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, resident, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public.

Knowledge of elderly ill and/or disabled.

Must have patience, tact, a cheerful disposition and enthusiasm, as well as the willingness to help when needed.

**Overview**

**This position is for our brand new Columbia, Maryland center which is expected to open in the winter of 2023! If offered the position, candidates may have a delayed start and must be willing to train with our current staff at our Greenspring or Odenton location until Columbia opens.

The **Therapeutic Assistant I** will implement instructional programs and evidence-based treatment protocols in a classroom (group, dyad, and 1:1) setting under the oversight of the Pre-Kindergarten Teacher, the MICC Teacher, or Speech-Language Pathologist. This staff member will interact with the children to encourage language, social, and self-regulatory development. The incumbent will also collect progress and treatment response data; assist with classroom organization; prepare teaching materials; and assist with parent communication and training.

**Responsibilities**

1. Carry out instructional programs as outlined by the Speech Language Pathologists.

2. Effectively implement behavior management strategies according to trained procedures.

3. Assist in data management functions to include data collection and data entry.

4. Provide basic care needs of students during groups and parent meetings.

5. Prepare and lead specified activities during groups.

6. Assist in the development of therapeutic materials.

7. Clean, organize, and maintains the classroom.

8. Support planning, preparation and staffing for supplemental programming.

9. Participate in parent awareness and training activities.

10. Complete medical, behavioral, and other in-service training as needed.

**Qualifications**

**EDUCATION:**

+ High School diploma or equivalent required.

+ College classes in Psychology, Education, or related field preferred.

**EXPERIENCE:**

+ Experience working with young children preferred.

+ Experience as a paraprofessional with young children with autism and implementing treatment protocols in a classroom or childcare setting is desirable.
