Arnold Palmer Children Hospital is seeking a Music Therapist The Music Therapist is responsible for providing music therapy in both group and individualized sessions for the purpose of meeting the psychosocial and developmental needs of the patients and their families. Assesses, plans, implements, documents, and evaluates the services provided based on policy, standards of practice, and interdisciplinary collaboration within the healthcare team. Shift : Pool (PRN) Responsibilities Essential Functions Assesses and interacts with patients and families using music therapy principles as well as theories of human growth and development, family systems and socio-cultural diversity. Recognizes and addresses the importance of music therapy in facilitating a patient's mastery of and coping with the health care experience and other potential life-altering experiences. Uses formal and informal assessment techniques to accurately determine patients' health needs and emotional status; documents such as related to specific music interventions. If working with children, uses assessment techniques to determine additional developmental considerations/status that will influence interventions; documents such as necessary. Identifies general issues in family dynamics and considers such while initiating interventions. Uses resources to accommodate cultural needs and to bridge differences. Provides direction to hospital volunteers related to patient care activity and services. Mentors the music therapy practicum students to enhance their understanding of music therapy practice and foster their ability to pursue further clinical training. Provides a therapeutic and safe environment for individuals and groups Facilitates developmentally appropriate group activities; attends to individual needs at bedside if indicated. Provides input for the music therapy program through the safe use and maintenance of age-appropriate supplies. Assists patients in coping with the stress of illness or loss by providing appropriate music therapy interventions Identifies various factors and coping strategies associated with different diseases and how specific music therapy interventions can positively impact patient adjustment and behavior. Determines and prioritizes the needs and the scope of music therapy interventions for each patient and their family. Incorporates techniques that encourage self-expression through original song creation. Collaborates with other disciplines on the health care team to advocate patient needs. Demonstrates, explains, and/or provides music education to enhance the quality of the healthcare experience by matching patient's interests and abilities with specific music modality. Demonstrates knowledge and ability to provide clinical support to patients and families of all age groups In collaboration with healthcare team, assesses patient needs and provides age appropriate, non-pharmacological pain management techniques to patients, i.e. music relaxation, auditory environment enhancement, and distraction. Provides parental guidance regarding effective use of music to assist with adjustment to hospitalization or medical treatment if working with children, Modify and integrate various music interventions to accommodate individual needs as well as patients in group settings. Ability to use recording studio equipment for the purpose of creative song writing and music skill development. Represents and communicates psychosocial issues of health care Advocates for the needs of patients and families by maintaining communication with members of the healthcare staff. Observes, assess and documents information/ interventions regarding the psychosocial issues of pediatric patients and families and the specific music therapy treatment plan to address those issues. Enhances professional growth to maintain current professional knowledge base Conducts self-evaluation and participates in establishing professional goals. Participates in unit/department/hospital meetings, committees and/or task forces. Assists the Senior Music Therapists or department management with tasks surrounding research projects, program analytics or other leadership initiatives as indicated. Adheres to the professional code of ethics and standards of practice for the Music Therapy profession. Establishes working relationships within the hospital system and with appropriate community agencies. Maintains board certification as granted by the Certification Board for Music Therapists Practices and promotes positive guest relations and administrative functions Engages with professional musicians and other musicians in training when presented with the opportunity to facilitate their involvement with patients and families. Participates in productivity and team building efforts in the department and in the hospital. Respects and supports patient/family's rights and advocates for patients/families. Participates in Healing Arts activities including choirs, exhibitions, concerts, and fundraisers as the need arises when working in the adult hospitals. Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards. Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures. Other Related Functions Effectively and efficiently uses resources, time, equipment, and supplies. Participates in department performance improvement efforts. Qualifications Education/Training Bachelor's degree in Music Therapy or related music education training. Licensure/Certification Must maintain current professional Music Therapist - Board Certified MT-BC certification; or eligible to sit for the exam and successfully complete within first year of employment.
