How will you make an impact?
This PPI-focused engineering role drives continuous improvement and engineering excellence at our Marietta manufacturing site. The successful candidate will lead initiatives that enhance production processes and sustain operational efficiency through Practical Process Improvement (PPI) and Lean methodologies. This position is crucial to achieving the site's targets for quality, delivery, and cost performance.
What will you do?
* Lead and implement PPI-Lean initiatives that enhance performance, reduce waste, and drive measurable gains in safety, quality, delivery, and cost.
* Coach, mentor, and engage employees at all levels in using Lean and PPI tools to strengthen a culture of continuous improvement.
* Evaluate the economic feasibility of capital projects and prepare justifications to support site investment and growth strategies.
* Collect, process, and analyze production and process data, resulting in actionable recommendations and improvements to management.
* Purchase and install manufacturing equipment, ensuring successful integration, qualification, and operator readiness, while developing and maintaining documentation throughout the manufacturing process to ensure consistency, compliance, and efficiency.
* Develop machine and personnel requirements and utilization plans to support long-range business strategies.
* Resolve shop floor technical issues to achieve production throughput and quality objectives.
* Recommend manufacturing processes, procedures, tools, equipment, layouts, and methods for process improvement and operational optimization.
* Evaluate product quality, cost, and throughput with Product Design Engineering to configure optimal production processes.
* Actively participate in New Product Development (NPD) to optimize manufacturability, process flow, and productivity.
* Review and approve Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) to ensure changes are robust, practical, and production-ready.
* Lead and support PPI teams by facilitating Kaizen events, value stream mapping, and root cause analysis sessions, and perform other duties as assigned to support the Marietta site's continuous improvement and operational goals.

* Knowledge and acumen within raw material processing of metallics, ceramics and composites, additive manufacturing of materials including stainless steels Aluminum, Ni-base superalloys and non-metallics.

Your Opportunity as the Senior Scientist ProcessEngineer - Pet Food Research & Development
Play a critical role in advancing our thermal processing capabilities in canning and extrusion (twin screw) for our pet treats division. Leverage your technical expertise to drive data driven results across our Pet Operations teams both in our Orrville pilot facilities as well as our out of state Pet facilities.
Location: Orrville, OH - Hybrid 60% or more in office presence as business need requires

In this role you will:
Champion process development and optimization for thermal processing and twin-screw extrusion, driving innovation and best practices within cross-functional teams.
Design, execute, and interpret trials for food processing innovations, facilitating knowledge-sharing and collaboration among teams.
Lead the successful scale-up and commercialization of new products and technologies by fostering teamwork and effective communication demonstration of CQV tools and principles.
Provide technical leadership and mentorship, guiding lab activities, supporting onboarding, and developing technical training programs for team members at all levels.
Collaborate across departments to identify opportunities for process improvements, solve technical challenges, and ensure alignment with business goals.
Analyze processing data using advanced modeling and simulation tools to establish specifications and guide team decision-making.
Drive continuous improvement initiatives and support organizational change management, ensuring all stakeholders are engaged and informed throughout transitions. Manage capital projects including equipment installation, layout planning, and vendor coordination, while leading project teams and maintaining collaborative vendor relationships.
Lead Design of Experiments (DOE) efforts, encouraging creative problem-solving and cross-functional contributions to system and process enhancements.
Operate independently and efficiently, managing projects with minimal supervision, while promoting an inclusive and cooperative team environment, including up to 30% seasonal travel as needed.
What we are looking for:
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelors in chemical engineering, food science, mechanical engineering, or related field is required.
5+ years' experience with advanced degree, or 10+ years with Bachelor's; experience in food manufacturing, thermal processing, and extrusion.
Demonstrated knowledge of food safety standards and validation practices.
Successful cross-functional project leadership and change management.
Skilled in process modeling/simulation (i.e. JMP, Aspen, Minitab) for throughput and quality optimization.
Understanding of ingredient functionality and its effect on food quality.
Experienced in scaling up and commercializing (CQV) processes.
Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving abilities.
Able to work independently and lead projects from planning through delivery.
Additional skills and experience that we think would make someone successful in this role:
Advanced degree in Chemical Engineering, Food Science, or Mechanical Engineering.
Experience in twin-screw extrusion of pet treats, including formulation development, die design, and post-extrusion handling.
Proven ability to innovate treat formulations through ingredient experimentation and process optimization.
Experience designing and executing pilot-scale trials with thorough documentation of process parameters.
Experience with operation and validation of thermal processing systems such as retorts, hydrostats, and continuous sterilizers.
Effective collaboration & strong communication within the cross-functional teams, including R&D, quality assurance, and production-based roles.

CENTRAL ENGINEERING (PROJECTS, EQUIPMENT, AND VALIDATION ENGINEERING)
- Plan, design & direct project installation/construction
- Contractor/Vendor Supervision
- Manage budget within project scope
- Assist in Facility and/or Equipment Validation IQ, OQ, and PQ
MANUFACTURING ENGINEERING
- Qualification of equipment modifications or improvements
- Troubleshoot existing equipment issues
- Coordinate with outside vendors
- Participate in deviation investigation and root cause analysis
MANUFACTURING SCIENCES
- Develop new drug products and manage product lifecycle
- Troubleshoot product issues during manufacturing
- Bulk hold, API Qualification, Pre-Validation, and Validation reports
- Opportunity for client interaction
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Candidates must be enrolled in a college or university obtaining a Bachelor's degree in chemical, biomedical, mechanical engineering, computer science, or related field.
To qualify, applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States, and should not require, now or in the future, sponsorship for employment visa status. Unrestricted US Work Authorization. Forms of OPT and CPT are restricted work authorization and are not accepted for this role.
