Thompson Coburn is a St. Louis, MO-based full-service law firm that has been dutifully serving clients since 1929. With locations in St. Louis, Bellville and Chicago, IL, Dallas, TX, Los Angeles, CA, and Washington D.C., Thompson Coburn is able to serve clients all throughout the States, while also serving some international ones.

Throughout the years, Thompson Coburn has been recognized and awarded by different organizations for having a great working culture and exhibiting industry-leading diversity and inclusionary practices.

Diving Into the Values at Thompson Coburn

Diversity & Inclusion

Thompson Coburn lives by a lot of core values. Four of them are:

  • Civility
  • Respect
  • Tolerance
  • Sensitivity
  • Those four values guide the way the company treats both clients and employees, and are heavily influential in the way they do business. Another big (maybe the biggest) core value of Thompson Coburn is diversity.

Tony Anderson, a Co-Chair at the company, said, "Diversity and inclusion are core values which we at Thompson Coburn strive to integrate into our daily interactions with colleagues, staff, clients and the outside world. I continue to be impressed by the Firm's ability to draw upon the talents and viewpoints that we collectively bring. There is little doubt in my mind that our approach to diversity and inclusion has made me a better (and healthier) attorney."

Aside from a diversity committee, Thompson Coburn has a few Affinity Groups, which are specially set up to recruit and retain diverse people and get them on board with the company. That's not all the groups do though, as they are also great resources for networking, business and professional development, community outreach, and a support system. The groups are African American/Black, Hispanic/Latinx, Asian, and LGBTQ+.

They also have an award-winning inclusive environment towards women. It is an initiative at the forefront of the company's minds. The statistics of women working for Thompson Coburn are exponentially more impressive than those if its competition.

Tom Minogue, the Firm Chairman, said, "We focus on 'valuing each other as people and colleagues' and 'respecting merit and rejecting favoritism.' We do this simply because it is the right thing to do. And we mean it. We act on our values, and we have invested time and money to create a workplace where everyone can feel respected and where the firm is a partner in their personal career success. Our people come from many places and with many life experiences. That combination of perspectives and talent is one of the reasons we are considered a leader by our clients and our community."

    The Culture at Thompson Coburn

    Bettering Communities and Lives

The Thompson Coburn culture goes hand in hand with the company's core values of diversity and inclusion. But the culture is also heavily influenced by the Thompson Coburn's, and its employees', involvement in the communities they serve. Thompson Coburn and its employees give back to their communities in so many ways. One of them is the Thomas F. Eagleton Scholarship, which is a $15,000 scholarship awarded to a first-year law school student enrolled in one of the participating Missouri schools. The scholarship comes with a summer internship and a mentorship with a Thompson Coburn partner. Thompson Coburn is involved with a ton of organizations, non-profits, and charities all across the country and in the cities that they work in.

The emphasis on diversity, inclusivity and community service creates a real family-like environment in Thompson Coburn offices. The people you work with become more than co-workers. More often than not, they become friends.
