Thor Industries, Inc. was founded on August 29, 1980, when Wade F. B. Thompson and Peter Busch Orthwein acquired Airstream from Beatrice Foods.

Growth and Expansion: 1988 and Beyond
In 1988, Thor acquired the small bus manufacturing division of the Kansas-based ElDorado Motor Corp.
1992 Four Winds International Four Winds International, a manufacturer of Class A and Class C motorhomes, was acquired in 1992.
By 1994, Thor Industries was the second-largest manufacturer of RVs in North America.
Komfort Corporation, a builder of travel trailers and fifth wheels, became part of the growing THOR family in 1995.
1996 Thor California Thor California was a start-up in 1996, which became one of the most successful RV start-ups.
Finally, in 1998, Thor added Champion to its bus-manufacturing group.
Sales of this model in 2000 hit all-time records.
2000: Thor named to the Forbes Platinum 400 list.
2001 Keystone RV When THOR acquired Keystone RV in 2001, the company achieved an unprecedented dominance within the RV industry.
In 2003, Bison began adding living quarter conversions to their production process resulting in the development of a complete line of equine trailers with living quarters.
2003 Damon and Breckenridge THOR acquired Damon, a manufacturer of Class A motorhomes, raising its profile in the growing motorized RV market.
In 2003, it added Damon Motor Coach of Elkhart, Indiana which it purchased for $46 million in cash.
2004 Crossroads RV With the addition of Crossroads RV in 2004, THOR solidified its industry leading position in towable RVs.
In May 2005, Thor acquired Goshen Coach, a bus manufacturer from Indiana that had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier in the month.
In November 2009, Wade Thompson stepped down as the company's CEO and was replaced by Peter Busch Orthwein.
2010 Heartland RV Company In September 2010, THOR made its largest acquisition to date when it purchased Heartland RV Company, further cementing its companies’ combined position as the world's largest producer of towable RVs.
In late 2012, Thor purchased two bus companies: California-based Krystal Infinity and Ohio-based luxury bus maker, Federal Coach.
In August 2013 then-COO Bob Martin took over as CEO of the company with Peter Orthwein moving to Chairman.
Thor acquired of K-Z Inc., a manufacturer of primarily travel trailers based in Shipshewana, Indiana, in 2014.
2015 Cruiser RV and DRV Luxury Suites In January 2015, THOR announced that its Heartland subsidiary acquired towable RV maker Cruiser RV (CRV) and luxury fifth wheel maker DRV Luxury Suites, both based in Howe, Indiana.
In July 2016, Thor acquired Jayco Inc. for $576 million.
In September 2018, it was announced that Thor had agreed to purchase Hymer, a German manufacturer of RVs, in a deal worth $2.45 billion in the largest acquisition in the company's history.
The sale was officially finalized in February 2019.
2020 Tiffin Group In December 2020, THOR acquired the Tiffin Group, a premium manufacturer of luxury recreational vehicles known for its excellent product quality, outstanding customer service and brand loyalty.
2021 Airxcel In September 2021, THOR acquired Wichita, Kansas-based Airxcel, a leading supplier of OEM and aftermarket RV parts and accessories.
