Principal Data Engineer
Hearst 4.4
Remote or New York, NY job
Job Title: Principal Data Engineer Experience: 8+ years
The Mission
Architect the real-time data backbone for 52 brands and 38M users. You will enable millisecond-latency experiences at scale, powering personalized feeds, live user scoring, and next-best-action models across 62M+ monthly page views.
About Hearst Newspapers
Hearst Newspapers (HNP) is a leading media organization that powers the next generation of consumer news products. As part of Hearst Corporation, one of America's largest diversified media companies, HNP employs over 2,500 professionals across more than 75 brands in a national network.
While HNP's reach is national, its focus is local. The company is committed to being the most trusted, respected, and accurate source of news and information in the communities it serves. HNP's comprehensive portfolio includes innovative digital products, data-driven journalism, and specialized businesses such as King Features Syndicate, Hearst DevHub, and StoryStudio.
The company is investing heavily in data engineering and machine learning to power next-generation news products while maintaining its core commitment to high-quality journalism that informs and connects communities across the country.
The Role
This is not a ticket-taking role. As a Principal Data Engineer, you will own the architectural standard for our entire data ecosystem. You will partner directly with the VP of Data and Senior Data Scientists to transform our batch-heavy legacy systems into a modern, event-driven platform capable of real-time decision-making.
What You'll Do (Strategic Leadership)
Architect for Massive Scale: Design the ingestion and serving layers for 38M MAU, moving beyond simple ETL to build low-latency pipelines that handle high-concurrency inference requests.
Define the Engineering Standard: You will set the bar for the team, leading code reviews and mentoring engineers to ensure reliability is baked in, not patched on.
Solve the "Real-Time" Problem: You will architect the serving layer for our ML models (Recommendation Engines, Churn Prediction), solving complex latency challenges to deliver predictions during active user sessions.
Modernize the Stack (Multi-Cloud Strategy): You will drive the "Buy vs. Build" decisions that shape our future, integrating best-in-class tools into our primary GCP ecosystem. You have the autonomy to retire technical debt in favor of modern, efficient frameworks like Daft, Flink, or Spark, and the ability to stick to the GCP ecosystem of leverage AWS (e.g. Sagemaker, Bedrock, AgentCore) if it's the best tool for the job.
Qualifications
8+ years of engineering experience, with a proven track record of architecting data platforms that scale beyond single-server limits.
Production MLOps Expertise: You have built "paved roads" for deploying ML models. You understand the lifecycle of a model from training to real-time serving and monitoring.
Multi-Cloud Fluency: You are comfortable architecting solutions that span ecosystems (e.g., orchestrating Airflow on GCP while leveraging specific AWS AI services).
Mastery of Modern Data Tools: Deep proficiency in Python and SQL is a given. You bring expertise in orchestration (Airflow/Dagster), streaming (Kafka/PubSub/Flink), and modern compute frameworks (Spark/Ray/Daft).
Leadership without "Management": You want to remain a high-leverage Individual Contributor who leads through architecture and code, rather than managing people and spreadsheets.
Why Join Us
Impact & Ownership: You'll shape our company's data roadmap and have tangible influence on mission-critical products.
Collaborative Culture: We value teamwork and constant learning, no one is above the details.
Hybrid Work Environment: Enjoy the flexibility of working from home while still connecting in-person with a NYC-based team.
Growth Opportunities: We invest in our talent and encourage continuous professional development.
If you are ready to define the architecture for a national media network, we'd love to hear from you. Apply today to join our team in NYC!
Our Benefits: At Hearst Newspapers we not only support our employees through personal and professional development, but we also believe in promoting each individual's physical, financial and emotional wellbeing (and that of their family). Our industry-leading benefits include:
Physical Wellbeing: Medical, Dental, and Vision coverage to keep you and your family healthy.
Invest for the Future: Competitive retirement plan with matching program in most markets.
Generous Paid Time Off: Recharge with ample time off, including holidays and vacation.
Paid Parental Leave: Support for growing families, with paid leave for new parents.
Monthly Child & Dependent Care Reimbursement: Financial support for the care of your loved ones.
Emotional Wellbeing: Be your best self with our mental wellness benefits.
LGBTQ+ & Inclusive Health Services: Inclusive healthcare designed for every individual's unique needs.
Fertility Coverage & Menopause Support: Helping you along every step of your family journey.
Pet Wellness Reimbursement & Rover Credits: We care about your pets, too - helping you keep them happy and healthy.
And more, click here for additional benefits and details.
The base salary for this role is between $220,000-$250,000. The actual base pay offered is dependent upon many factors, such as: transferable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.

Environmental Demands
Where you work matters. The job posting will provide specific information on where and when your amazing work would be performed. Employee work location is determined by the needs of the specific team and may include on-site, hybrid or remote. Employee work location is subject to change.
An “in-office” role would require the employee to come into the office most days with occasional flexibility to work remotely if tasks can be performed elsewhere and if the manager approves.
A “remote” role would allow an employee to work from a home office that is in one of the states Crain does business in. We can only employ a remote / "work from home" employee if they reside in one of these states: AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, IL, MD, MA, MI, MN, NV, NY, NC, OH, OR, TN, TX, VA, WA, WI, and Washington, DC.
A “hybrid” role would be a mix of in-office and remote work. There may be a specified schedule for coming into the office or it could be at the discretion of the employee with the manager's approval, subject to change.
Employees who live within a reasonable commute distance from a Crain office are expected to work on-site 3 days per week.
Many positions will also include work done in “the field.” Depending on the role, this may include conducting in-person interviews, attending work-related events, meeting with sources or clients. Specifics will be noted in the job posting but are subject to change as a role evolves. Employees may be exposed to adverse environmental conditions, specifically during field work. Other typical job functions are performed under conditions such as those found in general office work.
Travel to cover news stories/events, meetings with clients, and to our geographically separated offices may be required. It is the nature of many positions to experience non-standard working hours and be on-call when needed for responding to email, meeting with clients, attending work-related events, story development or breaking news. Most employees perform work Monday through Friday, although early-morning, evening or weekend shifts may be required. Work schedule and travel requirements are subject to change as a role and needs evolve over time.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of many Crain jobs and are subject to change.
Physical activities will include frequent in-person or virtual interactions. For most positions, it is essential to be able to remain at a desk/computer workstation for prolonged periods, perform computer-related tasks, and create/maintain documents within filing systems. Must have close visual acuity to perform an activity, such as preparing and analyzing reports and information, transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, or extensive reading. The typical physical requirements are light work-exerting up to 25lbs of force occasionally and/or up to 10lbs of force frequently and may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion. Some positions will have additional physical requirements, including exerting up to 50lbs of force to move and/or carry equipment, supplies, files, or other materials as the role requires.
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job functions and meet the environmental and physical demands of the role.
Equal Opportunity Employer/Protected Veterans/Individuals with Disabilities The contractor will not discharge or in any other manner discriminate against employees or applicants because they have inquired about, discussed, or disclosed their own pay or the pay of another employee or applicant. However, employees who have access to the compensation information of other employees or applicants as a part of their essential job functions cannot disclose the pay of other employees or applicants to individuals who do not otherwise have access to compensation information, unless the disclosure is (a) in response to a formal complaint or charge, (b) in furtherance of an investigation, proceeding, hearing, or action, including an investigation conducted by the employer, or (c) consistent with the contractor's legal duty to furnish information. 41 CFR 60-1.35(c)

Suburbs Reporter
The McClatchy Company 4.1
Remote or Fort Worth, TX job
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram is seeking dynamic, high-energy reporters to serve the needs of readers in some of the fastest growing parts of Fort Worth and surrounding cities. In a metro of more than 8 million people, these suburban areas are key components of our strategy to expand the reach and impact of our journalism. But don't think of this beat as a geographic one; your mission will be laser-focused on topics and issues we know matter most to these audiences.
Residents in these cities on Fort Worth's northern edges are passionate about their communities, which are among the most prestigious in Texas. To the west of Fort Worth, where the city fades into ranchlands and picturesque rolling hills, new development is booming at an astounding pace, including a new university, housing communities the size of cities and a future H-E-B. (Texans love this iconic supermarket chain.)
What nearly all these residents have in common - whether they're newcomers or native North Texans - are their desires for top-notch schools (with champion sports teams), housing opportunities and an unbeatable quality of life. They care about traffic and road construction, about the opening of new restaurants and retail establishments and the closings of well-loved favorites. They want their elected officials and local governments held accountable. And, like everywhere in America today, disagreements sometimes arise over local politics.
All of this is fertile ground for a resourceful, high metabolism reporter eager to build a following by publishing often, typically daily. You are right for this role if you understand that frequent, consistent publishing builds habit in readers, who come to trust that they can depend on you to deliver each day, giving them a reason to come back and engage.
Your mission will be to find stories that matter most to these suburban residents.
We're looking for strong source-builders who thrive in spending time in the communities they cover and finding ways to engage with their readers, such as personalized newsletters and "ask me anythings" about timely community issues. We also want to build relationships with local influencers who can help amplify our work and connect with more readers.
The ultimate goal is to make yourself a must-read for suburban residents trying to navigate life in North Texas, and in doing so, help the Star-Telegram in its overall mission to grow and retain loyal digital subscribers.
McClatchy Media's journalists are expected to take advantage of opportunities to ethically harness and leverage artificial intelligence and other automation to enhance and elevate their work and to find efficiencies that free them to focus on source-building and high quality, deeply reported journalism.
Fort Worth is one of the fastest growing cities in the country and is the 11th largest city in the United States. It boasts a lively downtown, concert and music halls, rodeos, incredible barbecue, world-class museums and the historic Fort Worth Stockyards entertainment district that celebrates our Wild West heritage. Our city is diverse, with about 35% of the population Hispanic or Latino, over 18% Black and about 5% Asian, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The Star-Telegram is committed to better representing the diverse North Texas communities we cover and to building an inclusive newsroom for staffers of all backgrounds.
What you'll bring:
* Strong reporting, lively writing, excellent news judgment and a demonstrated ability to "see the story" that is going to matter to readers.
* A proven ability to publish quickly and often.
* Deep understanding of a digital-first, audience-forward approach to journalism.
* Ability to juggle breaking news, quick-turn enterprise and utility-driven stories.
* A track record for innovation, learning and using new skills and technologies, especially using AI-powered tools responsibly to improve efficiency, coverage and innovation.

An “in-office” role would require the employee to come into the office most days with occasional flexibility to work remotely if tasks can be performed elsewhere and if the manager approves.
A “remote” role would allow an employee to work from a home office that is in one of the states Crain does business in.
