TiVo company history timeline
Macrovision Corporation was established in 1983.
The TiVo idea began to shape up in the late 1990’s with Ramsay and Barton working together to provide a project network in Orlando.
TiVo was a giant leap into the digital age that can be traced to the ambitious “Orlando project,” a 1994 venture by Time Warner to use televisions to fully network a community in Florida so that people could email, shop, and choose movies on their TV screens.
After the Orlando project folded, Barton left SGI. In 1997, he and Ramsay recognized an opportunity: letting users easily record and watch their favorite shows on their own time. “They didn’t just want to build something good.
TiVo, Inc. started in 1997 and became a public company two years later.
TiVo and their partner Philips shipped the first hardware on March 31, 1999 - a day which has become a holiday for TiVo employees in subsequent years.

Since the company’s inception in 1999, the aforementioned age group has evolved into sophisticated user of technologies formulated by the likes of TiVo.

TiVo service was launched in the United Kingdom in the autumn of 2000.

Beginning in 2000, TiVo, again with partner Philips, released their first integrated DirecTV/TiVo receiver/DVR - often called a DirecTiVo.
However, Thomson, makers of the only TiVo model in the UK, decided to cease production in early 2002, and soon Sky+ began to dominate the PVR market.
T he company signed its one-millionth subscriber in November 2003, but had yet to record a profit, racking up more than $550 million of debt in its attempt to bring TiVo to the masses.
By April 2004, TiVo may have had only 1.4 million subscribers, but it had become a household name.

In July 2005, the company hired Alfred J. Amoroso as chief executive officer and president to succeed William A. Krepick, who announced his retirement earlier in the year.
TiVo's fortunes began to improve in 2005, an eventful year for the co mpany that hinted at the beginning of widespread acceptance of DVR te chnology.
In 2005 DirecTV dropped TiVo and developed its own DVR.

TiVo may struggle to hold on to its market if it fails to differentiate itself through low prices for its products (Albarran, Chan-Olmsted and Wirth 338). According to Albarran, Chan-Olmsted and Wirth (2006; 298) the DVR industry has been consolidated.
More recently TiVo began technology reviews from CNet, and on June 7 2006, TiVo announced TiVoCast www.tivo.com/cms_static/press_95.html.
TiVo announced the release of the Series3 on September 12, 2006.
The companies announced that they would make TiVo's service available over Comcast's cable network, with the first co-developed products available by the end of 2006, using the TiVo brand.

Macrovision acquired Gemstar-TV Guide on May 2, 2008, in a cash-and-stock deal worth about $2.8 billion.
On July 16, 2009, Macrovision Solutions Corporation announced the official change of its name to Rovi Corporation.
On June 16, 2010, the company announced the Rovi Advertising Network which bundled guide advertising and third-party interactive TV platforms.
On March 1, 2011, Rovi announced its acquisition of online video guide SideReel.
The company announced Amoroso's intention to retire on May 26, 2011.
Tom Carson, formerly the executive vice president of sales and marketing, was appointed CEO and President in December 2011.
Jim Barton stepped down in 2012.
In April 2013, Facebook began licensing Rovi metadata for use within the service.
Continuing on this path, the company made a similar announcement in January 2014 indicating its intent to sell the DivX and MainConcept businesses.
On April 29, 2016, Rovi Corporation announced that it had acquired TiVo Inc. for $1.1 billion.
In December 2019, TiVo Corporation announced their intent to merge with Xperi.
The merger was completed on June 1, 2020.
