The problems began in August 1989 when Australia’s domestic airline pilots resigned en masse as part of a campaign to secure a 29.7% salary increase which was outside the government’s 6% wages accord and centralized system.
TNT’s profits for the September quarter of 1989 were 70% lower than for the same period a year before.
From late 1989, however, TNT encountered a series of serious problems.
TNT Distribution Services Inc., also founded in 1990, handled assembly and distribution services for the Chicago metropolitan area, southeastern Wisconsin, and northwestern Indiana.
The damage subsided after the dispute, but hopes for a return to profit growth disappeared in 1990, when Australia, the United Kingdom, and North America fell into recession.
Founded in Australia after the second World War, TNT went Dutch in 1992 following rapid international expansion.
By the end of the year, operating revenues had reached $898.9 million, just over 12 percent higher than in 1992, with income topping $27.3 million.
In March 1993 TNT Freightways negotiated the purchase of TNT Ltd.'s remaining equity of over 5.5 million shares (about 20 percent) in the company, following the former parent's decision not to sell the stock in a public offering.
TNT Auto Warehousing was later sold in 1993 when the company decided to concentrate solely on trucking and logistics operations.
Red Star and Holland had accounted for two-thirds of the company's revenues in 1993.
By 1994 TNT's regional truck lines served 90 percent of the continental United States, and the company was determined to raise this figure to 100 percent coverage, including Alaska and Hawaii.
By upping its territorial coverage and increasing its shipment size, TNT Freightways Corp.'s nearly 5,000 tractors and 11,000 trailers carried over 6.4 million tons of freight in 1994 and were well on their way to doubling this figure by the end of the decade.
TNT Services Group, Inc. was founded in March of 1996 by Don and James Tarleton.
On 2 October 1996, KPN publicly bid for TNT. The friendly take-over was completed in December 1996.
The company now also obtained a listing on the New York Stock Exchange, followed in 1996 by listings in Frankfurt and London.
By the end of 1996, TNT began selling and installing windows and exterior doors to residential builders.
In April 1998, TNT opened its state-of-the-art European Express Centre (EEC) in Liège, Belgium, to process all freight consignments within Europe.
On Monday 29 June 1998, TNT Post Group (formed by TNT and PTT Post) separated from KPN. From that date, TPG stock was listed independently on the stock exchanges of Amsterdam, New York, London and Frankfurt.
In November 1999, TPG and the Swiss Post established a strategic alliance in express and courier services.
In April 2000, TNT’s continued growth initiated the leasing of an additional 4000 square foot warehouse in Frederick.
TNT purchased seven acres of land at Stanford Business Park in early 2000.
In 2002, TNT announced its partnership with the UN World Food Programme, under which it would deploy its people, resources and skills to help WFP in the fight against world hunger.
In May 2004, TPG announced major expansion of the TNT Express European air hub in Liège, Belgium.
In December of 2004, TNT decided to move away from interior products to fully concentrate on its core business of exterior doors and windows.
On 14 January 2005, the name TPG is discarded, in favour of TNT. The TNT brand is now used globally to increase worldwide recognition and to allow for more efficient brand communication.
On 31 October 2005, TNT announces the lease of two B747-400ERF freighters to begin a new direct service between Europe and Asia.
On 6 December 2005, TNT announces the acquisition of TG+, a leading Spanish domestic distribution company, to expand and strengthen its domestic express business and to fuel its international express business in Spain, a strategic market in Europe with high growth potential.
On 29 September 2006, TNT signs the Equity Transfer Agreement with Shanghai-based Hoau Group, to acquire its nationwide road transport and freight business.
On 10 January, 2007, TNT announces the completion of its acquisition of 100% of the shares of Expresso Mercúrio S.A. (Mercúrio), Brazil’s market leader in domestic express.
In 2007, TNT launched Planet Me, a programme to reduce the company’s CO2 emissions in a wide variety of ways.
On 16 February 2009, TNT announces the acquisition of 100% of LIT Cargo, a leading express delivery company in Chile.
In 2012, TNT began offering the installation of house wrap and several customers are utilizing this service today.
In 2016, the company was acquired by FedEx.
