The district received borough status on 16 December 1983 and the council was renamed Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council.
The expansion of trade and the opening in 1994 of the Channel Tunnel, with a terminus at Folkestone, brought new importance to eastern Kent as a warehousing area and a focus of shipping and other transportation routes.
Tonbridge Dementia Friendly Community (DFC) was set up by local resident, Chris Parker, in 2015.
Cllr Mrs Sue Bell became Mayor of Tonbridge and Malling on 10 May 2022.
