Tool and die machinist job description

• Must have current Journeyman's card or 6 years of experience in trade

• Set up, operate, adjust machine tools in performing moderately complex assignments requiring a high degree of accuracy and precision on products having interrelated dimensions.

• Work from blueprints, engineering and quality specifications and verbal instructions.

• Assist in the development of rough sketches and fabrication of appropriate hardware based on information provided by Engineers and/or Designers

• Make recommendations to Designers and Engineers for design improvement

• Meets costs, schedule and quality objectives for all assigned jobs. Occasionally estimates these items.

• Determines method and sequence of machining operation required, and upon completion assembles and adjusts final product.

• Suggest appropriate material for assignment based on knowledge of material qualities and application.

• Expected to coordinate moderately complex assignments.

• Tests and debugs completed equipment and communicates with appropriate function to document necessary changes

• As necessary, designs and builds special temporary tooling to assist in making the part.

• Recognizes the need for and actively participates in the maintenance of tools and machines used in performing job responsibility.

• May provide technical assistance to other tool and model making personnel on difficult operations and setups.

• Maintain awareness of and adheres to all location safety procedures and practices. Keeps work area and equipment clean and organized.

We have an excellent career opportunity available for a Tool & Die Machinist to join our operation. This position will maintains the tooling for the Vinyl department by performing the following duties.
Sets tooling into production equipment insuring proper setup and operation.
Evaluates vinyl tooling in need of repair and coordinates with outside vendors for repairs as needed.
Receives repaired tooling when returned and ensures it was properly fixed. Tracks tooling repairs to evaluate turn around time and cost.
Studies specifications such as blueprints, sketches, models, or descriptions, and visualizes product to determine materials required and machines to be used to fabricate parts.
Computes dimensions, plans layout, and determines assembly method and sequence of operations.
Sets up and operates lathes, mills, and grinders to machine parts.
Fabricate assemblies for production machinery from various materials to include sheet metal, structural steel, and bar stocks.
Examine standard or previously used dies, tool, jigs, fixtures and, machinery components and recommends design changes.
General maintenance to include plumbing, machine repair, general diagnostics, pneumatics, hydraulics, rigging, and facilities maintenance.
Performs good housekeeping skills to maintain a clean and safe working area.
Performs activities in accordance with the procedures outlined in the work instructions.

Requirements

Associates degree from a college or technical school / Journeymen's card in machine related technologies; or 5 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Responsibilities:

• Sets up, operates, and maintain a variety of industrial machines
• Fabricates and modifies parts to make or repair machine tools
• Applies knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout and machining procedures
• Aligns and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines.
• Selects the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machinery work.
• Machines parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, or grinders.
• Sets up, adjusts, and operates all of the basic machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools to perform precision machining operations.
• Measures, examines, and tests completed units to detects defects and ensures conformance to specifications
• Sets controls to regulate machining, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.

Skills

• 2-5 years previous machinist experience in a manufacturing environment
• Basic reading, writing, and arithmetic skills required.
• Excellent communication skills
• Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
• Able to monitor performance and be able to make improvements or take corrective action.
