Interprets drawings to visualize final form of die, part or tool, and plans sequence of operations to achieve desired end result
Works from prints, sketches, verbal or written instructions, or from existing part to be copied or fitted
Lifts, positions, and secures parts to be machined on surface plate or worktable, using hoist, vises, v-blocks, or angle plates
Sets up and operates machine tools such as CNC mills and lathes, manual mills and lathes, CNC and manual grinders, wire EDM, saw
Plans the set up and operation of machine shop tools considering types of material, tolerances, types of cutting tools, coolants, lubricants, and machine tool feeds and speeds
Programs mills and lathes using conversational programming and/or CAM by entering instructions including setting zero and reference points, tool registers, tool offsets, geometry of part, etc.
Verifies dimensions, alignments, and clearances of finished parts, using measuring instruments such as CMM, calipers, micrometers, height gages, dial indicators, and gage blocks
Fits and assembles jigs, fixtures, tools and dies, using wrenches, hammers, arbor or hydraulic presses
Troubleshoots poor performing tools, identifying deficiencies and suggesting improvements
Designs jigs, fixtures, or templates for use as work aides
Inventories, requests, and investigates alternative cutting tools and shop supplies
Promptly and accurately completes all required recordkeeping and inspections
Performs routine machine maintenance as assigned
Other tasks, projects and functions as assigned.
Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent preferred; equivalent relevant experience may be considered
Trade school or Apprenticeship program preferred
Exhibits in-depth job knowledge and skills
Adjusts machine feed and speed, change cutting tools, or adjust machine controls when automatic programming is not optimum
Develop CNC machining processes by selecting the chucking device, cutting tools, tool arrangement, and cutting speeds and feeds with emphasis on standardization
Create and maintain CNC programs to produce parts using CAD/CAM software. Experience utilizing GibbsCAM, MasterCAM, Fusion 360, Edgecam, Partmaker, or Esprit is a plus
Thorough understanding of workholding, datums, sequence of operations, tool selection
Can prioritize the work and coordinate with others

Responsibilities:
Ability to perform set up machining jobs in CNC Vertical machining centers
Experience programming and machining with 4- and 5-axis CNC machines in a wide variety of materials

The National Geographic Society headquarters, based in Washington, D.C., is undergoing a significant renovation project on its campus (called Base Camp), which will be completed in 2026. The public-facing portion of this renovation will be the new National Geographic Museum of Exploration. Components of the new museum will include a state-of-the-art pavilion entrance, auditorium, iconic photo gallery, exhibition space, immersive walk-through attraction, retail, food and beverage, education center, archives, tours, and exciting new event space. The capstone of the renovation is a one-of-a-kind nighttime experience in the courtyard.
This position supports the Exhibit Production Manager in implementing the construction, fabrication, and assembly of all Museum of Exploration and Traveling Exhibit elements. This position works closely with the Creative Team on developing, prototyping, and producing all exhibit displays. This position also works directly with Base Camp carpenters, painters, and framers to maintain all exhibit areas throughout Base Camp. The Specialist will collaborate with the traveling exhibits team by building and constructing traveling exhibit crates and refurbishing existing crates for reuse. This position will support the NG Print Lab with Museum of Exploration exhibit graphics and signage. This position reports to the Exhibit Production Manager and supports the entire Experiences division. It requires evening, weekend, holiday, and/or non-standard work hours or a shift between 8 AM and 8 PM, along with some domestic travel to support our Traveling Exhibits.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Verify that material and paperwork for the job being performed is correct
Plan machining in accordance with all blueprints and hard copy and electronic technical data and specifications, applying geometric dimensioning and tolerances as required
Set-up mills by adjusting all necessary fixturing and machine attachments; setting and applying tool and machine reference points and offsets and calculating requirements using basic math, geometry, and trigonometry
Check stock and load and unload the machine
Create an in-process inspection report for each operation, as necessary, if one does not exist
Identify non-conformance, if discovered, notify your supervisor so that it can be documented identified, dispositioned, and segregated from the remainder of the lot
Verify that there are no chips on either the jaws/fixture or on the part/material to be machined.
Load the part/material, verify that the part is properly seated in the fixture/jaws, snug against any stop pins prior to clamping or tightening of the jaws
Identify discrepant material left in your work area, notify your supervisor so that it can be dispositioned and segregated.
Follow all quality procedures, work instructions, and documents pertaining to your job and department.
Identify any problems/issues while running an operation, notify the supervisor immediately
Responsible for keeping the machine and the immediate area clean
Monitor coolant levels
Clean the chips from machine at the end of shift, or when the job is finished
Verify that all company and personal inspection equipment and tools being used are in calibration.
Adhere to all company safety policies including the use of eye and ear protection.
Perform all functions of the job while adhering to established quality policies and procedures

Wire Hot runners, hot sprue, thermocouples in addition to replace hot runner components

Cleaning, lubrication, polishing mold components
Evaluate, maintain, and repair injection molds

Ability to make small parts in a manual lathe, milling machine, surface grinder
Knowledge of core pull hydraulic cylinders being able to rebuild / replace
Must be able to read blueprints, part prints, interpret mechanical drawings and wiring schematics
Assist in maintaining the spare part inventories used for mold repair and maintenance

* Set-up Haas CNC machine to run production order using defined tools and fixtures, verification of program, and documentation review (drawings, job packet, router, etc.)
* Run machine to complete production order within the required standard times
* Measure and inspect completed parts to customer requirements and department standards
* Prepare finished product for next production operation or shipment as needed including washing, wrapping, packaging, etc.
* Comply with all health and safety requirements based on each operation
* Complete all required production paperwork in a timely and accurate manner. This includes using a scanner and computer to log time and completed parts
* Participate in and support improvement projects within production environment
* Assist in other cells as required, i.e., assembly, surface treatment, etc.
