Tough Mudder company history timeline

2009

Tough Mudder was founded in 2009 by two British citizens living in New York, Will Dean and Guy Livingstone (60/40). The relationship between the two dates back to when they were boarders at the Oundle School in Northamptonshire, England at the age of 13.

2010

In May 2010, the first Tough Mudder event was launched via Facebook with limited budget.

The May 2nd 2010 event was sold out in about 35 days for just under 5000 participants.

2012

TM introduced a team category in 2012.

2013

The most serious case was undoubtedly that of Avishek Sengupta, who died following an accident in the Walk the Plank obstacle in 2013.

But 2013 also meant the end of the daily involvement of Livingstone, the company's co-founder.

2014

The event probably recalls the class action filed in 2014 by runners after TM moved an event (Mudderella, an all-female version of TM) from Boston to Maine at the last minute.

2015

Livingstone sells some of its shares as part of an agreement with TM and steps down as CEO. Several sponsors and partners have accompanied Tough Mudder over the years, but in 2015, Merrel became the first sponsor to have the title of presenter.

2016

Mid 2016 marks the start of a new charitable partner: Team Rubicon.

2017

In the end, it's just a color! Will Dean also published a book "It takes a tribe" in September 2017.

During the agreement between TM and Active in 2017, Active would have advanced several million dollars to TM in the form of pre-purchase tickets for future events.

2018

At the end of 2018, it was no less than 18 million in credit that TM had to repay.

2019

Towards the end of January, TM announces that no prize money will be awarded to the winners of the competitive events in 2019.

2020

The announcement of transparency towards price increases and a new in-house customer service department would be in place for 2020 rather than using outside firms.

While the activities of TM UK were already in motion, the acquisition of TM UK by Spartan was formalized which ensures the complete 2020 UK calendar.
