Tower Club company history timeline

1916

The Tower Club was initially known as the Electric Club, founded in 1916 by opera enthusiast Samuel Insull, who established Commonwealth Edison and, according to legend, was the inspiration for Monopoly character Rich Uncle Pennybags.

1929

After Insull commissioned the building of the Civic Opera House, the club moved there in 1929.

1962

The club was ranked an exclusive organization "for the young man on his way up," as a 1962 Tribune story put it.

1966

By 1966, the benefits that were accruing to Tower Club had been observed by the officers of the other clubs, a few of whom were belatedly wondering whether they should affiliate with this successful enterprise.

2000

In the spring of 2000, Tiger Inn joined the Foundation, allowing Princeton Prospect Foundation to be of use to all of Princeton’s Eating Clubs.

2005

Also, when Campus Club closed its doors in 2005, it too was no longer part of the Foundation.
