What can you expect? As the Tower Technician II, you will work throughout various job sites within Alaska performing general construction duties as part of the STG construction crew in extreme Alaskan conditions. While his position is tailored towards Tower Erection and Microwave Installation it will also include civil and grounding work. STG focuses on new site builds and microwave maintenance. How will you do it? Perform trade for long hours, day after day, often in adverse conditions, to complete the project at hand. Follow directives from Project Foreman, and anyone senior, with the sense of duty to take initiative and always remain productive at work while on the jobsite. Climbing to heights of up to 300 feet daily in rural arctic environments. General construction of tower sites to include, but not limited to; site layout, excavation, foundations, erection, installation, and maintenance/repair. Installation of microwave antennas, systems, and all associated components. Alignment and cross-polarization of existing and newly installed antennas. Installation of all hardware related to telecommunications tower and equipment. Perform grounding, weatherproofing, and testing. Working with a diverse selection cable types, connectors, and antennas. Tower rigging and crane signaling. Perform physical labor that requires considerable use of one's arms and legs and moving your whole body such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials at construction sites. Work closely with a variety of other trades. Application of versatile construction skill set to assist other trades to meet project needs. Submittal of all necessary paperwork to Project Management and Accounting in a timely manner. Adhere to and perform duties pursuant to the company wide safety plan. Responsibility to report any incident, situation or activity that may affect the company's ability to operate safely, ethically and profitably to the company Risk Manager. Duty to conduct oneself in the best interest of the company while on the job or representing STG. Act as a team member and mentor less experienced laborers. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: All around knowledge of materials, terms, and practices in construction field. Extensive knowledge of climbing gear, rigging, and tower safety. Proficiency with hand and power tools. Proficiency in rigging. Rope and knot tying skills. Ability to safely utilize electronic test equipment and other specialized tools in performance of duties. Ability to safely use harnesses, belts, ropes, and any other required protective equipment gear required to meet all duties of position. Skill in organizing resources, establishing priorities, meeting deadlines and general time management. Ability to work in a team environment, take direction from supervisor(s), high degree of attention to details, follow work rules, and adhere to project schedule. Five (5) years or more experience in the construction field, with at least three (3) of the years of experience specific to tower erection in rural arctic environments required. Must have prior experience working with microwave antennas. Experience sweeping waveguide required. Tower Safety and Rescue Certification required within 3 months of hire. Rigging certification required within 6 months of hire CDL required within 12 months of hire. First Aid/CPR training or ability to become certified. Valid state driver's license and qualified to operate a vehicle under the conditions of STG's Driving Policy. Ability to pass a drug, driving (if applicable), and background screening. Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience in Alaska's rural construction industry is preferred. P osition Purpose/Summary The Telecom Technician is committed to providing the highest quality of service to the communities, customers, and employees we serve by providing installation, testing, maintenance and repair of telecommunication facilities and equipment, such as, but not limited to, telephony, video service, FTTx, internet and wireless in a safe and proper manner set forth by company policy and without constant supervision. Primary Duties & Responsibilities The below list of duties and responsibilities is meant to cover a wide range of operational areas and technical levels and as such, some of these may not apply to your area of operation (location) and/or your current technical level (Trainee through Telecom Tech IV). Your supervisor will provide clear direction on what duties are expected of you and will provide a detailed path for career growth opportunities. Install new Broadband services, including but not limited to; video service, wireless, internet, cable modem, DSL, telephony, and FTTx services. Responds to service orders for troubles, upgrades, removals, or changes to a customer's residential or business broadband services, which includes key systems, telephony, video, internet, and FTTx. Ensures that all service orders, troubles, and locates that are assigned to him/her are closed out daily. Installs ONT's, jacks, pedestals, terminals, splitters, taps, protectors, and grounding. Ensure company inventory is maintained and reported for items utilized by technician. Maintain timesheets, vehicle records, company issued test equipment and any company property/equipment. Performs routine office maintenance and/or repairs on equipment (such as, batteries, alarms, air filters and general fluid levels) and follows procedures for maintaining site logs and records. Responsible for locating fiber, coax, telephone and marking cable routes. Splices and repairs new and existing telecommunication cable. Climbs poles & towers to install or repair telecommunication lines and facilities. Troubleshoots malfunctioning telecommunication cables using testing devices such as meters and analyzers, to locate and the diagnose nature of the problem and make repairs. If applicable, changes out Cable Television (CATV) headend equipment, such as, but not limited to, receivers, video ciphers, modulators, and scramblers. If applicable, troubleshoots from the house to the headend, such as, but not limited to, amplifiers, line extenders, bridges, and power insertions. Installs, tests, maintains, and repairs advanced telecommunication services, such as, but not limited to, DDS, XDSL, and T1. Performs the installation, operations, maintenance, testing, and provisioning of Central Office equipment from various manufacturers. Has a basic understanding of the technology behind; Wide Area Network equipment, protocols and services, Fiber Optic systems and equipment including OC-1, OC-3 OC-12, Sonet, CWDM and DWDM. Has a basic understanding of computer network protocols and equipment, such as but not limited to Routers, Switches, Ethernet, SMTP, IMAP, and SNMP. Operates equipment such as, but not limited to, backhoes, trenchers, cable plows and dozers. Installs, operates, and maintains radio systems, such as, but not limited to, microwave, UFH, VFH and BETRS where applicable. Completes specialized reports, logs, and reports as required. Responds to ASR's and is responsible for coordinating and/or performing Engineering, Installation and Provisioning of the basic equipment to fulfill an ASR. Understanding how all departments contribute to the success of the organization and referring customers and employees to the appropriate department to best fulfill their needs. Perform “Lead Technician” duties, such as but not limited to, mentoring less experienced technicians, act as job or crew lead on projects, assisting area supervisor as requested. Knowledge of regulatory agencies and requirements around telecommunication incidents such as RCA, FCC, FAA, NORS, and PSAPs preferred. Knowledge of ITIL framework; specifically Change Management, Service Validation and Testing, and Incident Management. Wireless Radio Access Network (RAN): Broad based working knowledge of and ability to maintain cellular systems, transmission facilities, and equipment typically found in a Mobile Telephone Switching Office and Wireless Radio Access Network. Demonstrated knowledge of Wireless RF concepts such as UMTS/HSPA, GSM/GPRS/EDGE, CDMA/EVDO, LTE and 5G preferred. Experience with Ericsson and Nortel Wireless Networks preferred. Understanding of RF propagation principles and cellular theory preferred. Knowledgeable of transmission facilities including the test, turn up, and troubleshooting of T- 1 and Ethernet circuits required. Satellite/Microwave RF transmission (RF): Broad based working knowledge of and ability to maintain satellite modems, microwave radios, PCS equipment, MMDS equipment, and LMDS equipment. Demonstrated knowledge of RF transmission concepts of multiple access, duplexing, and communications protocols. Experience operating, maintaining, or installing satellite, microwave, or other wireless networks to preferably include programming, configuring, and troubleshooting. Understanding of RF transmission principles used in microwave or satellite communications preferred. FCC license is desired. Core Transport Network (CORE): Broad based working knowledge of and ability to maintain complex voice, SONET and IP transport, cable and data networking systems and standards. Experience with network troubleshooting and corrective maintenance; responding to circuit and facility outages within GCI's network; isolating outages and working with appropriate technical groups to restore service. Experience in a wide variety of telecommunications networks to include Force 10/Turin, Cisco ONS, ALU, Calix GPON, BTI, TYCO NEC, Tellabs, ECI, Juniper, and ADTRAN equipment. Comprehensive understanding of standard operations concepts such as availability, redundancy, reliability, and testing. Working knowledge of Linux/Unix operating systems. Ability to diagnosis basic routing problems. Knowledge of IP address nomenclature and meaning, IP protocols, IP routing, router and switch components and facilities, Communication facilities (fiber, cable, RF, PSTN, T1, ISDN, DDS, etc.) and Communication equipment (CSUs, modems, xDSL, wiring frames, cabling, etc.). Additional Job Requirements: Entry level technical position within the network control monitor and surveillance discipline with a basic skill set and proficiency working under close supervision. Conducts work assignments as directed with an understanding of telecommunications network technical environments. Reviews planned and unplanned changes to network infrastructure ensuring all networks are meeting industry standards and performance goals. Follows all documented procedures and participates in troubleshooting response and resolution. Provides on-shift surveillance and supports senior level technicians and management. Compile and submit notifications and reports on network status and activity. Initiate notifications to management as determined by protocol to ensure the proper operation and maintenance of the company's network. Monitor the network and associated network elements, investigating and determining the cause of network events and alarms. Perform network troubleshooting and corrective maintenance. Respond to and isolate outages, working with the appropriate technical groups to prevent and/or restore service. Initiate disaster recovery actions as required. Interact with internal teams; the company's customers and vendors in a professional manner to resolve issues at the lowest level and as timely as possible. Work closely with various engineering and network control technicians to support development and implement tools and processes to improve capabilities ensuring quality service levels. Provide technical support and assistance to senior technicians. Mentor junior technicians as requested. Minimum Qualifications: Required: * A combination of relevant work experience and/or education sufficient to perform the duties of the job may substitute to meet the total years required on a year-for-year basis High School diploma or equivalent. Associate degree in Telecommunications, Computer Science, or related field. * Minimum of four (4) years of increasing responsibility and experience within a technical network telecommunications environment or related background. * Preferred: CCNA (Cisco), Juniper, or SCTE DOCSIS certifications. Telecommunications experience. Other relevant telecom industry or job specific certifications. DRIVING REQUIREMENTS: This position may require access to reliable transportation for occasional travel between retail store locations, offices, worksites, or other locations as needed. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS and WORKING CONDITIONS: Position requires working a rotational schedule. Work is primarily sedentary, requiring daily routine computer usage. Ability to work shifts as assigned, work in standard office/home office setting, and operate standard office equipment. Ability to accurately communicate information and ideas to others effectively. Physical agility and effort sufficient to perform job duties safely and effectively. Ability to make valid judgments and decisions. Available to work additional time on weekends, holidays, before or after normal work hours when necessary.
