Town of Brunswick company history timeline
After the Revolutionary war the town continued to grow with increasing rapidity, and about 1800 the first stage line was opened between here and Portland.
Joseph MeKeen was the first president, and the first class entered in 1802.
In 1805 the Pencinian Society was founded.
In 1808 the Athenaeum Society was established.
The medical school, which is now in a flourishing condition, was established by the Maine Legislature in 1820.
The college has recently received gifts to the amount of $110,000.* Brunswick's oldest newspaper, the "Brunswick Telegraph," is edited and published by A. G. Tenney, of the Bowdoin class of 1835.
Leonard Woods of the Bangor Theological Seminary, who served the longest term of any President of the college, continuing in office until 1865, and was one of Bowdoin’s ablest leaders and most distinguished.
The Brunswick Naval Air Station, established during World War II, was reactivated in 1951.
Control of municipal affairs by town meetings open to all registered voters continued until 1969, when a council-town manager government was adopted.
