In the 1880’s Cornelius was a small cotton weighing town. It incorporated in 1905.
That Dam Project: What most folks don’t know is that planning for the dam that created Lake Norman was begun in the 1920’s with Duke Power buying up farm land well ahead of the project.
Duke Power created Lake Norman in 1963 as a “working” lake to produce hydroelectric power.
Today the City continues to grow with an estimated population of 12,161 (as of December 2015).
