Needham, Massachusetts company history timeline

1853

In 1853 a second line (Boston to Woonsocket) was laid, connecting East Needham to Boston.

1856

Carter came to Needham from Alfreton, England in 1856 and set up a knitting shop in his home.

1864

The largest was the William Carter Company, formed in 1864.

1865

The construction of Carter’s first mill on Highland Avenue, circa 1865.

1879

In 1879, the First Parish church was lifted up onto rollers and moved to its current location on Dedham Avenue, firmly establishing Great Plain Avenue as the new town center.

1881

Needham suffered a setback in its growth in April 1881, when West Needham voted to separate from East Needham and form the new town of Wellesley.

1950

The creation of one of the nation's first industrial parks in 1950, the later addition of high technology firms, the improvement of access to Route 128 and Boston, and Needham's fine schools and public services have contributed to the town's emergence as one of the more desirable suburbs of Boston.

2002

The Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, America’s newest and most innovative engineering school, was dedicated in 2002.
