Traffic technician job description

The purpose of the position is to construct, repair and maintain traffic signals and signs on streets and in department locations. This is accomplished by completing traffic signal maintenance and repair; fabricating signs; preparing equipment for installation; installing and modifying signals; and preparing equipment for installation. Other duties include conducting traffic counts and inspecting equipment and signals for repair.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities

* Completes signal and flasher maintenance by diagnosing problems; replacing lamps; repairing, replacing and aligning signal heads and signs; connecting power failures; and testing the operation of replaced equipment.
* Prepares equipment for installation by ordering poles, signs, letters and other related materials; fabricating signs; ensuring current standards are met in the installation and maintenance of signs; testing controllers, controller cabinets and associated equipment; and assembling signal heads and signal associated signs.
* Completes preventive maintenance by checking controllers, cabinets and associated equipment; tightening connections and hardware; replacing lamps; checking emergency vehicle and loop detectors; ordering warehouse supplies; and testing operation of replaced equipment.
* Installs signals and zone flashers by completing site preparations; running cables and conduits; erecting poles; installing controllers; and installing, connecting and testing signals.
* Completes traffic counts by placing and retrieving counters; downloading data; and presenting information.

Qualifications

* High School Graduation or equivalent
* Two Years of experience constructing and repairing traffic signal systems and signs

Supplemental Information

* Knowledge of methods, materials and techniques used in the maintenance, construction, installation and repair of traffic signals and signs, electricity and related wiring, and electronics as it related to traffic signal equipment
* Skill in the operation of bucket trucks, hand and power tools and two way radios
* Skill in the operation and use of standard office software which includes databases and presentation programs, along with standard Microsoft products
* Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, with co-workers, the public, and elected and appointed officials

Traffic Technician: Ensures that all streets, roadways and intersections are properly and safely marked and controlled.

Examples of Duties

* Designs, construct, assemble and install signs.
* Make and install sign post bases (manual pole driver)
* Repair old signs
* Maintain, repair, rebuild and replace traffic cabinets, traffic signals, ornamental street lights and posts.
* Perform preventative maintenance on traffic control cabinets.
* Test and certify conflict monitors
* Adjust, repair and replace malfunctioning parts such as traffic signals, lights, load switches, relay conflict monitors and traffic controller.
* Rebuild, install and wire ornamental light ballasts and light poles.
* Replace ornamental light bulbs and globe covers, which includes overhead work performed with a harness in a bucket truck.
* Marks streets and roadways.
* Inspect pavement markings created by contractors.
* Use power and hand tools.
* Load/unload portable generators during power failures.
* Drive/operate vehicles: bucket truck, dump truck and pick-up truck.
* Other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience

* High School diploma with a least five years of directly related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
* Valid Virginia Driver's License.
* Prefer electrical experience and certifications.
* Must be available to work on-call rotation.
* Must be available to work shift assignments during inclement weather (e.g. snow, ice, storms, etc.) that affects traffic signals and snow/debris removal from roadways.
* Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions.
* Must successfully complete a background investigation and pre-employment medical screening.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

The work requires physical exertion such as walking over rough or difficult terrain; recurring standing, stooping, climbing or walking; recurring lifting of moderately heavy items weighing between 25 and 75 pounds and may require the occasional lifting of objects weighing in excess of 74 pounds. The work may require specific physical characteristic and abilities such as heightened strength, mobility, and dexterity.

The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress that require a range of safety and other precautions, such as: high volume traffic, working in close proximity to electrical lines and heavy equipment, and during inclement weather that requires the employee to wear specialist personal protective equipment.

Pay Rate:

The pay rate for this job is $14 / hour

What you'll be doing as a Traffic Technician / Flagger:

* Work with team to establish safe movement of traffic around work zone, in accordance with safety regulations and/or Department of Transportation regulations

* Flag motorists to warn them of obstacles or repair work ahead

* Take ownership of work zone and pass vehicles safely

* Place signs, barricades, traffic cones, and other warning devices- duties will vary according to job assignment

* Respond to emergencies as directed and perform tasks in the interest of public safety and property protection during emergencies

* Work outdoors in all weather conditions

* Communication skills required - flaggers remain in constant contact with the crew

* Remain in a stationary position for long periods at a time
