Trailer Bridge company history timeline

1991

Trailer Bridge was founded in 1991 by Malcom McLean, who is recognized in the industry as "The Father of Containerization". McLean had previously started McLean Trucking Company in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, which he built into one of the largest trucking companies in the United States.

1992

1992: Company Begins Full Scale, Profitable Operations

Trailer Bridge set out to transport stacked containers to embarkation points in the United States and then ship them via barges to Puerto Rico, and began actively offering the service in 1992.

1993: Company begins first full-year of operation.

1996

By 1996, Trailer Bridge's success prompted the company to modify both of its triple-deck barges.

1997

In March 1997, it ordered two new, specially made, 408-foot ocean-going container barges, which, when completed, would double the company's cargo hauling capacity.

In 1997, Trailer Bridge went public on NASDAQ and moved its headquarters to Jacksonville.

Such ambitious plans had to be put on hold, however, for, starting in 1997, despite annual increases in revenue, Trailer Bridge's bottom line went into the red. Its loss of $2 million in 1997 was its first recorded loss since its initial year of operation.

2000

In September 2000, it signed a multi-year agreement with Sensormatic Electronics Corporation, the world's leading supplier of security systems.

Despite the new business, Trailer Bridge's net loss reached $10.3 million in 2000.

Over the years, it expanded its fleet and capacity, and in 2000, it unveiled its shipment tracking tool.

2001

2001: Founder McLean dies at the age of 87.

2004

In 2004, Trailer Bridge purchased all of Kadampanattu Corporation's stock, thus gaining two 736-foot, triple-deck, ro/ro barges.

2010

In 2010, Trailer began offering weekly service to and from Jacksonville and Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.

2011

During the 4th quarter of 2011, the company had notes totaling $82.5 million come due.

2012

In the first quarter of 2012, a judge approved their reorganization plan which effectively gave Seacor Holdings control of the company with three of seven directors on the Trailer Bridge board.

In 2012, Trailer Bridge celebrated the 20th anniversary of its inaugural voyage and five years of service to Puerto Plata, DR, and also reached its one millionth customer booking, established TB Logistics, and added more containers, making it one of the world's largest fleets.

2015

In March of 2015 is when they let the CEO go and offered me that role.

2020

At the beginning of 2020, we’re poised to launch this big company-wide upskilling initiative.

2021

In 2021, Trailer Bridge announced partnership with supply chain and logistics SaaS firm Mastery Systems.
